Another day, another prog/metal purist who still has a sore butt because not every critic liked his favorite bands in a book published 40 years ago. The difference with rising star Freezerburn is that he's posted in a thread about that topic 81 times since Friday. 81 times. In three days and change. And this verbose twat shows no signs of slowing down. He ticks all the boxes: I know Rolling Stone is garbage because I never read it; all music critics are nothing but frustrated musicians; it's all part of a conspiracy devised by Jann Wenner and his minions; critics are bitter because they never got dates in high school; I know more about music than anyone who gets paid to write about it; etc., etc. forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/rolling-stone-record-guides-anyone-else-get-irritated.723049/page-17#post-21494537

That guy has issues that go beyond Sabbath and Rush. The whole thread is total circle jerk.

My review of Freezerburn.
Hey Freezerburn. The critics were right. Your music sucks. All of it. You have wasted your life and thousands of dollars on complete and utter crap. No-one cares what music you like, as you have shit taste in everything. Not your family, not your few remaining friends, not the wankers at SHTV...even your neighbours laugh about you and shake their heads every time they overhear you playing one of your godawful CDs. You really haven't got a fucking clue about music at all have you.
Zero stars.

Does a carpenter know more about building houses than a non carpenter? Yeah, so his opinion about how well a house is built is based on experience and knowledge on how to build a house. Same thing as a musician versus a non musician. So yes, the carpenter or the musicians opinion would be more valuable. People can argue about this simple fact all they want. All these critics need to pick up a guitar and jam. Doesn't mean you'd want to live in the house though. I understand what you are saying. But if you take your answer to my analogy one step further, you could draw the conclusion that it would be better to live in a house built by a used car salesman for example, than by a carpenter. Complete nonsense. A carpenter can can pontificate on how well a house is built, just like a musician can discuss technical chops. Neither of those things are particularly helpful in discussing aesthetic merit. So a really bad roof or a bunch of bum notes the regular guy doesn't spot means the pro and the regular guy have the same standard of aesthetic merit? Not at all. In the red edition Gentle Giant is dismissed as "bathetic bathwater" In the blue this is fixed. But it still leaves the question of how it got in in the first place. I remember being irritated with the original “red” guide because there were no reviews of Badfinger albums. RS proclaimed The Beastie Boys - Licenced to Ill as The Greatest Debut Album of All Time. Part of this was to try and legitimize thr RnRHoF induction, but it should show you exactly where RS in terms of credibility. C'mon man, Jan Werner and his crew are elitist, cultural terraformers. They are not trying to give you info, so you can make up your mind, They are trying to make up your mind FOR YOU. Their pompous, self-importance...and ultimately the gravity of their influence was critically tied to one thing: They needed you to take Popular music SERIOUSLY, they needed you to think that the future of the world truly depended on the latest Bob Dylan record....and their review of it of course. They wanted you to think John Lennon was just as important and influential as the President. And thus, these records they review are of CRITICAL IMPORTANCE....thus ROLLING STONE is of critical importance. This is the true reason for Jan Werner's white-hot HATRED of KISS, KISS was Jan Werner's worst nightmare, he could see them eroding the public perception of how important he was. How dare KISS be "over-the-top" FUN!?!? This isn't supposed to be FUN, it's IMPORTANT!! I would think he'd hate the Dead as they played to a cartoonish stereotype, the "Burned out Hippy" something Jan would hate to be called. Sabbath? Again, I'm guessing the lyrics were too Dungeons and Dragons for him and he thought they made the whole Rock genre look silly.......No idea why he doesn't like the Moody Blues......Maybe for the same reasons I DON'T LIKE the Moody Blues. A broken clock is right twice a day, y' know.

No magazine that has had Britney Spears on their cover should ever pretend to have good taste, or should ever pretend that they are in any way the arbiters of what is worth listening to. The only way any music magazine or record guide can be successful off the backs of actual artists (whose fans don't need a magazine telling them what's good or not), is to make themselves into (severely aging, in this case) hipster tastemakers. So it has to ultimately become more about critics' snarky attitudes, and often negativity towards anything that defies their criticisms, and then it is about music.

30 pages in Freezerburn gets sick of people disagreeing with him. Some dork asks what these horrible fucking books have to say about Nick Drake and Big Star. Burn refuses the request and decided to leave the thread. His parting shot is amazingly weird and stupid:
"Thanks. I can PM you anything that you may be curious about in terms of the guide. Some of my posts were worthy of criticism for sure, but now anything directed at me is just click bait designed to provoke. Not going there."
Does Freezerburn know what click bait means?
Is he unselfaware enough to think his three days of rage posts about 40 year old books (books no longer in print) wasn't provoking SHiTEs?
This dude is an all-star.

RS being perceived as Left Media has had that dope worked up for years, evidently.

Love it when these clowns dig up that old DLR burn about music critics looking like Elvis Costello as some sort of Checkmate move, like they're such stud muffins themselves.

If you're going to fire off post after post of incendiary garbage, at least man up and take the heat you've got coming. That makes me wonder how many times he reported responses to his posts in that thread instead of answering them.

Likewise the idiotic "dancing to architecture" quip that's so often attributed to Frank Zappa. They really see it as some great "gotcha" quote when the talk turns to critics.
