Remember that the credit was enough to get Monsieur Hoffman revered by a record store owner in Nice, France. Oh, yes! That totally-true story the STeVE concocted recalled two different times, with two different timeframes and two totally different outcomes... So, without any further ado, here’s the master storyteller in action: June 1, 2011: In the 1980s a friend had an old beat up USA Atlantic album called "Surfin' With The Shadows" and he played me the original APACHE. Having only heard the song in the USA version I flipped out for the "cleaner" arrangment and great Fender guitar sound. I had heard of the Shadows (mainly from the Beatles song "Cry For A Shadow") but didn't know anything about them except that they came right before the Beatles. Of course I went in search of Shadows records. When I was in France in 1982 I bought (NOS from the early 1960s) beautiful 10" Shadows LPs, EPs, etc. and lovingly carried them home with me. When I got back I went to the wonderful import section at Tower and bought a bunch of in print Columbia UK LPs, the Greatest Hits and their first album (with the cream Tele on the cover), etc. I guess these came back in print around that time on LP for a short while. Boy did they sound wonderful.. Needless to say I am a rabid SHADOWS fan. I love how Hank Marvin plays his red Stratocaster in this clip from the movie THE YOUNG ONES: I love the "choking" sound he gets. When I got the DOT LP of THE YOUNG ONES I was amazed to hear the Shadows sound I loved so much backing Cliff Richard. Of course I branched out to Cliff Land and got a bunch of original UK Columbias. Just last year I grabbed every UK 45 off of a dealer I know over there. When I want to smile I play Cliff & The Shadows APRON STRINGS. Best sound? The green label Columbia UK 45's. Nothing can top 'em. So I discovered the Shadows in March of 1982 and Cliff Richard just a few months later. Late, I know but take pity on this American. They had NO air play over here at all and nothing in print for many years. Better late than never.. And just a year later, STeVE “remembers” the date as 1985, as he pushes the needle on the Douchebag-O-Meter well into the red zone: November 20, 2012: I was in a record store in Nice, France (on the Riviera, darlings) in 1985 and they had every mint original EP 10" of The Shadows on French Columbia in stereo (cardboard tags still intact and everything). They were behind the counter and I wanted them! Guy pretended not to speak English until he saw the name on my credit card. He did a double take and pulled out his French MCA Buddy Holly "For The First Time Anywhere" LP and begged me to sign it. All of a sudden he could speak my language. I was actually astounded and was glad to sign for him about 4 copies. He GAVE me all of the Shadows 10" disks and I lovingly carried them back with me to LA.

My favorite part of these stories is that in both he “”lovingly carried them home”. Every STeVE tale has some oddball phrase or detail that stays the same even as everything else changes.

STeVE thought it sounded desperate to have himself write his name on some franc notes.

I'm not gonna lie. I hope Blowstein starts a digital streaming service with Hoof-man as his remasturbator. We need another shitshow. All these legitimate companies are no fun. The best part? No P.O. Box needed! I forecast something a bit like that quite awhile back. The neatest part? STeVE can now buy (or "borrow") those cheap 100 song comp CDs of golden oldies and remasturbate just the public domain stuff, then sell it to his herd as downloads.

I love the "choking" sound he gets. Leave Michael Hutchence out of this, Hoofy! Oops that's a different thread. Sorry.

Or maybe he can set up his own public domain label and remasterbate YouTube rips and lossy files just like those other labels do.

Guy pretended not to speak English until he saw the name on my credit card. And as I said at the old SC, there is no way any record shop in Europe accepted credit cards in 1985. Or even 1995. COLA is correct. And think about it. Every purchase follows a set list of steps. The credit card/cash is pulled out at the *end* of the sale, when both parties have agreed to the transaction. Not while the items being discussed are still on a shelf behind the proprietor. At that stage, of course, the card/cash is still in the pocket of the buyer. Hooofstain's tall tales are always full of holes you could drive a semi through.
