I'll be completely honest, I love the Monkeys and their music. My older sister got into them big time during the '86 reunion and we younger ones gravitated around her so we got sucked in. My big issue with the Shite Monkee Fans is the demand for MORE, MORE, MORE. I am sated with that 1991 box. I cant think of any big name band or artist that has their material mined as much as the Monkees. Remasters with bonus tracks, 3 disc sessions for albums, 2 disc remasters with outtakes, new albums - it doesn't matter to these guys they want MORE. Gluttony.

They want to analyze and dissect the Monkees the same way they do the Beatles. First off, they spend way too much time and brain power on the Beatles. Second, there simply isn't nearly as much to look into with the Monkees. They are digging for gold in a shallow sandbox. Never mind the fact that, like with anything else, one senses that they don't even really just listen to and enjoy the Monkee music.

I downloaded a couple of deluxe editions of two Monkees albums recently, just to see what some of their out-takes sound like. Whilst I've always enjoyed their "greatest hits", my conclusion was that NO artist could possibly have so many embarrassingly abysmal out-takes and lightweight cheesey album tracks as the Monkees.

Actually, I'd say that a lot of bands might have as many embarrassingly-abysmal outtakes, but they stay unreleased. Rhino has learned that Monkee fans want ALL of it, so they continue to make it available. (Rhino is also quite willing to put one previously-unreleased song on a new CD to entice the fanatics to buy said CD. It obviously is working because the both sides keep doing it.) As for "lightweight cheesey album tracks", you might be right. Considering the fact the Monkees' original fans were 12-year-old, pre-pubescent girls, and that the producers were mercilessly targeting said audience, it's no surprise the Monkees' albums are full of dross. (In this regard, it's no different than other albums created for the teenybopper market.) But, what has happened in the case of the Monkees, is that the group is now championed by a bunch of middle-aged men. It's this dynamic that is so interesting, because it's kind of rare for other pre-conceived "16 Magazine fodder" to have such crossover appeal. I mean, you don't usually see Monkee-level male adoration for Bobby Sherman, the Osmond Family, the Bay City Rollers, New Kids on the Block, or most other acts that were originally marketed to young women. (Obviously, the Monkees' TV series is the tipping factor here, as the only other "Tiger Beat" group the SHites clamor for is The Partridge Family. In both cases, the SHites grew up with the TV shows after school.)

I'm not surprised. Have any SHites petitioned KHhusband to remasterbate the Little Jimmy Osmond back catalogue?

Can a gort please move this and any future Monkees threads to Forbidden Topics? This would include any solo work or guest appearances on other artist's records by the boys. Thanks!
