I have it on good authority that Our Gracious Host got upset with the following poat.
He banned Jamie Howarth without warning. The latter is a mastering/restoration specialist who has an actual career (won grammies and everything) in the mean ol' biz that barred Steve-O since 1986. He has been on the forum since 2005; pretty low-key, boomer, a bit dry but not an annoying narcissist like STEVE or VIDIOT. Anyway, the word is that after inquiry STeVE let him back in after 24h, calling it a "website error". 
I just don't understand how someone like that can put up with Hoofman's antics, but there ya go.

Hey, STeVE is actually credited for the mastering of an album that won the Latin GRAMMY Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition in 2010 (it featured a new composition by Lalo Schiffrin).
Funny thing is that the 2009 version listed STeVE and Kevin Gray as the mastering engineer, while the "Yarlung 15th Anniversary Edition", a remaster, removes Gray, but adds the label head (who also did the actual recording) and another guy from the label as mastering engineers, and suggests that STeVE (who is credited on everything they release) had no involvement with the new version.

Jamie Howarth's description is correct, later verified by Russ Gary. The clean sections are moved to the end of the Master Tape, known as trims or edit sections. What Steve is describing are Production Masters, where the entire mastered album with fades/EQ/levelling is dubbed onto a single reel of tape and used for cutting lacquers. |

Level is lower but dynamic range is very similar. I wonder if your host ever did much mastering without compression or limiting. Like, does he disable the HF limiter in the cutter? The vertical limiter in the cutter? Talk to Steve to figure out how his masterings retain their dynamic range, and how he employs zero additional limiting or compression when mastering. He’s made many posts about it over the years, so try a search (maybe after the forum indexing is completed). Have a great Sunday. :link:
Howarth is being a bit of a blowhard on that thread (apparently he worked on this release and he wants to make sure the people know) but now he's trying to educate the SHites that compression is necessary in recording technology. Of course, he's not wrong. But, he quickly gets a lesson from this idiot about how STEVE would never use any form of dynamic range reduction.

I’ll just say this: if Steve Hoffman mastered Who’s Next today, he wouldn’t apply additional limiting in the mastering. He would leave the full dynamic range as presented on the master tape. That’s what he always does. You have know way of knowing that, and nobody *always* omits limiting or compression. As I stated, it's built into the cutter head electronics, at the very least. The difference you hear from the flat master is not the limiting, it's different mastering EQ. What BS. Compression is not necessary in mastering. If you've got a good mix, the only reason to compress in mastering is that you're afraid the audience won't like the music enough to turn the volume up on their own. I think I'll trust the words of a real audio engineer over some random dude on these forums. Thanks, I'll dedicate the rest of my life to satisfying your personal requirements for making comments on a forum. That way I can stop wasting everyone's time I defer to your vast experience mastering hit records. |

I don’t think any reputable mastering engineer would defend the use of compression/limiting in remastering catalog releases. It’s not true to the source, hampers sound quality, and caters to the “loudness wars.” Reputable according to who? The folks here? Their job is to deliver what is asked of them. But there are certainly reasons why compression/limiting is used other than the loudness wars. Steve Hoffman: "I never use compression or limiting in my mastering." Right, one guy's opinion. Other mastering engineers might feel differently. You are on the SHTV forum. We care about sound. Nobody here is going to defend the “loudness wars.” Read the threads linked above. I did. Steve Hoffman, as great as his work is, is not the only mastering engineer on the planet. Nor is he the only good one. It boils down to taste and opinion. Bad taste. In my opinion. Thanks, but every cutter has acceleration limiting, so I don’t know how you can employ a selective quote from one mastering engineer as common practice without taking that into account. That’s an outlier statement. And like so much other partially understood tech here … I stand by his last line. Get over it. You think Grundman, Kevin Gray, Bellman, Ludwig never use limiters on their reissues? Why am I even discussing this? Mr. Hoffman is by no means the only experienced veteran here when it comes to reissue practice. I am sure he would not take offense or issue with that. With all due respect to SH, why are we going on and on about what Steve would do, is he currently active mastering current releases? If yes, I haven’t seen any, I see all kinds of releases mastered by KG, BG, RKS and CB. I did a shootout over the weekend of many different masterings: Steve Hoffman 2014 HDTracks Flat transfer SHM 2022 remaster Steve’s does it for me in all the right ways. The other three are very similar in sound, definitely darker than Steve’s. I find his to let each instrument shine in its own space, while also still being a cohesive part of the mix. I hadn’t listened to his in a long time, and I really missed it. It’s what I’ve wanted out of each mastering since the 2014 one. Thanks, Steve. WTF use any additional limiting at all? Especially if it is, as you state, “very little”? :crazy: Some mastering engineers can’t keep their finger off the trigger. Pity. Oh ye of vast experience, lol. Most mastering engineers use the tools with taste and judgment and avoid dogma. Just do what’s right for the material. |

Fuck. Hoofman's Who's Next mastering sounds like total shit. I mean it's REALLY bad! I don't understand how anyone can think it has the breath of life. I mean, he killed whatever life that master tape has with that shit mastering.
