On a thread discussing a Beatles tour in 1970 :
Nintari : During Lennon's last radio interview, a few days before he was taken from us, he mentioned (paraphrasing here) how he never wanted the Beatles to be old and on stage, huffing and puffing and trying to perform in their fifties... and to that, I have to agree. It's human nature to want great things to last forever. But nothing stays "great" for very long, and only the smart people know when to pack it in before it begins to devolve.
The Beatles did just that.
Maccafan : Opinions vary.
I think the Beatles would have been absolutely great to this very day! I understand why they separated but I also think they should have stayed together and worked it out. I also really think they should have kept performing live. Sure take a break, even a long break if necessary, but after a while get back out there and perform keep your live performance chops up. With the material they had a tour would have been absolutely awesome, and coming back on the live performance scene, no one would have outsold them.
The Beatles live after Let It Be would have been the must-see concert in rock.
Sluggy : They gave up playing live BECAUSE they couldn't perform to a sufficient standard that pleased themselves, nor was the technology available to perform the kind of music they were releasing.
And the performance world in 1970 was miles away from 1966. The Beatles were no longer cutting edge live. A Beatle concert in the 1966 mould would have been held in derision in 1970.
Maccafan : The Beatles could have easily performed! They would have rehearsed to their satisfaction, chosen a setlist that they were happy to perform, and come out and done their thing! The rooftop is proof!
(someone dares to posit that the Stones would blow the Beatles away on stage in 1970) : The Stones could only wish they would kick the Beatle's butts! The vocal power of the Beatles alone would blow the Stones away, on top of that the material the Beatles had, on top of that the fact that the Beatles hadn't performed live for a long while, the Stones might not even show up!
the interest for a Beatles tour would have been absolutely through the roof! It's not about them touring because they needed to, it should and would have been because they wanted to!
The rooftop showed that they could have done it, it showed they had material, now just imagine if they decided to fully rehearse, put together a setlist they could perform live and present a whole concert.
As I said it would have been the major event in rock!
