STeVE is boasting about the good ole days of DCC Doors Strange Days:
'm getting my mastering room hooked back up slowly after our flood and I grabbed a CD to play while I was doing stuff in there, happened to be the DCC Compact Classics Gold CD of the DOORS "Strange Days."
I hadn't played my version in many years, usually listening to the old LP or the old Elektra CD. Sometimes I hesitate in playing my old mastering stuff, just in case I don't like it anymore or something. At any rate, I put on LOVE ME TWO TIMES and I was struck at how long it had been since I played my mastering, and how much Jim Morrison sounded alive on it. Hadn't heard him like that for so long I forgot it is not that way on any other version.
So, I pulled out my old notes on STRANGE DAYS. The "credo" at the top sez it all:
"Make Jim Morrison sound like a Human Man! Nothing else matters in this version, let the other instruments fall where they may!"
Also I wrote: "This master tape has no f*****g bass whatsoever. Too thin, too edgy, no body so FIND SOME IN MASTERING."
I think I did just that. Jim sounds alive, the tone is full and nice, natural sounding and the overall presentation has (dare I say it) the "Breath of Life."
So, after looking at what I did in mastering, (the wacky mini pin tubed 1959 Ampex 351-2-P that I played this back on, the vintage Pultec EQ I used to get any kind of BODY out of this mix, etc.), I did some crazy sh** but it seems to have worked.
I was genuinely surprised and pleased. The vinyl LP we cut should have the same nice, rich "alive" sound.
Hope you got yours when they were $25.00. We sold maybe 10,000...
Oh, here is one you can buy for $584.00. :^)
