I'm unsure which forum to post this, so if the moderators feel it should be in another thread (possibly the Music Forum, since most of it is about that forum), please feel free to move it.
I posted this in the "Now and Then" thread which is so active, it became buried almost immediately. I think this also applies outside of that thread, so I'm posting it here. I'd like to share my experience of being someone who has been a member since it was the DCC forum.
In the early years it was "safe" to express a dissenting opinion in a thread where many members are rhapsodizing about an album, a song, a book, etc. It doesn't feel that way anymore.
Re: my choice to not share my opinion on Now and Then, despite feeling like I have something productive/constructive to say: My main frustration about this forum is that many, many members seem to perceive someone else expressing an opinion that differs from theirs (specifically in the case of expressing a criticism of something they love/like) as threatening.
They, in turn, respond as if the poster had made a personal attack on them, by sometimes attacking/retaliating. I have frequently read defenders saying things like, at the low end of throwing shade, "if you don't like it, don't buy it," "why did you post to this thread if you don't like it" or some form of "shut up." And at the high end, I see personal attacks and name calling.
I often expect that, if I express my opinion, I will be the target of this type of attack/shade based on many, many experiences of being on the receiving end of personal attacks, just because I expressed a dissenting opinion. As a result, I'm very careful how, when and what I post, to the point of not participating in threads where I feel I have something of value to offer, but which I expect to be attacked for expressing an unpopular opinion.
That is why I am not sharing my opinion about Now and Then (and a number of topics on other threads) even though I feel I have something constructive to say, even though I feel I know I have something of value to contribute to that conversation.

Been that way for a while, now.
Nowadays, it seems like nearly everyone here wants echo chambers. Anything else is grounds for ridicule by the intolerant and mentally weak. Civil discussions in situations of disagreement can be rare.
As an example, a member posted a nice detailed review of a new pressing he compared to a handful of other versions. As it was 5x cheaper than the upcoming audiophile pressing and due to its great sound, he concluded purchasing this pressing to be "a no-brainer". Another member piped up to essentially state that having that opinion is indeed a no-brainer. Unnecessary, passive-aggressive and unwarranted.
Being passionate doesn't have to translate into going after anyone who happens to view things differently... but it is far from being a rare occurrence.
My 2 cents.
