Yes, look at the bright side. Tangent: No small irony that Eric Idle, the man who wrote Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life, thought Neil Innes was a cunt, and vice versa. Looking forward to hearing his heartfelt condolence at some point.

Looking forward to hearing his heartfelt condolence at some point. Nah, Neil Innes was way too nice for that. Idle was pissed off about Innes doing the Archeology album in 1996 thinking it a shit idea until he realised the songs were actually good and nabbed them for use in his execrable Rutles 2 film which came to define the term ‘shit idea’.

Idle was the weak link. Watch him “playing” the bass. Fuck me dude, at least try.

Idle was the weak link. Watch him “playing” the bass. Fuck me dude, at least try. No doubt. And he's the only member who's ghosted on the soundtrack album by an actual musician. Idle's probably my least favourite Python too (though Cleese and Gilliam have turned out to be curmudgeonly fuckers in their twilight years as well, so it's a tough call).

Tougher crowd than me. I ragged on Idle above based on his willingness to shill stuff like Spamalot and edge out Innes. But he was a non-musician comedian who got real players to fill out the Rutles; in light of that, Always Look On the Bright Side is a pretty impressive work that will outlast 99% of songs written by "real" musicians. I'd rate him a prince next to the elderly Gilliam and Cleese. [shite off -- sorry; just some residual shaking and crying]

Stay hard, Eric!

I have absolutely nothing against any of the Pythons. I'll even forgive them the George Harrison connection. Harrison rates highly in my book for underwriting Life of Brian, and being self-aware enough to parody himself in Rutland Weekend Television, and even appearing in the Rutles TV movie. Financing LoB is the best thing he did after leaving the Beatles (and it more than makes up for every turgid solo album of his).

I like most of what the Pythons have put out and thought that The Rutles was an effective parody. (Although I will concede most of the members became curmudgeons as they aged.) Recently, I’ve been enjoying the Python albums from the seventies, with “Stake Your Claim” giving me a nice case of the giggles. The skit, which was not done on Flying Circus, was performed in German for one of the two Fliegender Zircus specials. Someone at YouTube took the German visuals and edited in the audio from the album:

I love all things Python. I got that massive Blu-ray box set from the UK and can’t wait to dive in.

Mikaela has been poating for RIP threats lately. Maybe she and Brad got married and she’s now picking up his slack? She’s a ghoul. She’s getting off in the Alex Trebek thread.

The way people are getting off with anticipation over his impending death, I bet Trebek now wishes he never had mentioned a fucking word about it. I think his candid discussion of his illness helped my grandmother. She'd been watching Jeopardy for as long as I can remember (and then Wheel Of Fortune so my grandfather could get the evening Numbers.) I definitely think it gave her some perspective as she dealt with her cancer. She knew by the end that she was too weak for chemo or surgery and stoically accepted that the next time something was found, there would not be anymore treatment. And I'm positive that seeing Alex Trebek accept the hand he's been dealt was helpful. Unfortunately her last battle with cancer was in the brain and over the course of the two weeks or so that it happened, her mental state deteriorated rather quickly. Sure, there were some moments of clarity, even a few fleeting glimpses the last time I saw her, but she was far removed from having serious conversations pretty much as soon as the brain cancer started affecting her. I had seen her on a Sunday and she was the same as she always was and then just two days later it's like she aged twenty years. It's all too fresh and current and I'm still processing it now but I'm also remembering all the good times, even in the past year. Like when I was in the city last Christmas with my sister and randomly decided to call my Uncle only to learn he and my grandma at a restaurant a few blocks away. Or spending a day out with grandma and my uncle on my birthday. Or all the times this spring when I was laid off and went to visit rather than sit home and do nothing. And all the years of pleasant memories, mundane or otherwise but all still special.
Stay hard, Grandma.

That sounds rough to deal with. I hope you take comfort in the fact that your Grandma is now rocking out for eternity at the Lennon/Elvis/Tork concert.
