I've never quite understood the relative tepidness of Beatles fans to "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." How is it qualitatively any different at all from "When I'm 64" or "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da" or "All Together Now?" I mean, if you are gonna be a Macca fan, don't those songs epitomize the essence of the man and his gift to music? Nonsense lyrics set to melodies that would not be out of place in insurance commercials? It's like saying "I love Led Zeppelin, but I just don't get 'Whole Lotta Love'" or something... The songs are proof of the form. Of course it is a dopey song. But it is Macca at his most Maccanine.
Of course, you are never permitted to suggest that the Beatles released some pretty dumb songs; that's like saying sometimes Jesus could really act like a retard. So naturally, if you don't like one of their songs then you need to haul your ass over to the re-education camp. You'll come out of that thread loving "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" all right.
Or, you might come out like I did after a thread like that, just hating the fucking Beatles.

Most of these Beatards don't like "Maxwell" 'cos John, George and Ringo all slagged it off on numerous occasions post-breakup, which makes great fodder for the anti-McCartney crowd. Yet, they all played on it when they recorded the fucking song- if John, George and Ringo hated the song so much they coulda just told Paul, "Fuck you, I'm not playing on this piece of shit! Do it yerself." But they didn't.
And Christ knows Paul McCartney has written many songs over the years that make "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" seem like "Eleanor Rigby".

Dude has been pining for decades? To accept one song?
I have an idea...grow a pair, ignore the damn song until you die and stop whining about it on a music board. I hope that guy is trolling them.

Me in Jim Gaffigan voice: "But I like Maxwell's Silver Hammer!"

I never understand this mentality. You're under no responsibility to like anyone's entire catalog. Spend time with music you like rather than wasting time stressing about having someone convince you to like Maxwell's fucking silver hammer.

Oh, for fuck's sake!
See the little button on your player that looks like this: [ > ] ?
Press it and the song will magically disappear until the next time you play the album.

Most of Abbey Road is a chore to listen through. The two Lennon tracks on side one, "Here Comes The Sun", and I'm done.
But that's just my taste in music, and I like that about myself.

Even better with the digital files -- exorcise the crap right out of your collection. Always loved the "I play albums front to back ALWAYS" comments. Sounds more like a chore than fun to me.

I've been doing it lately and I enjoy it. BUT there is no "right" way to listen to music, unless you're not enjoying it, in which case I'd say you're doing it wrong. If you dislike Maxwell's so much that you need to open a thread on it, feel free to never play it again.
