Again.
This goes on forever so I just randomly chose a starting point..
BurtThomasWard:
And since this isn't primarily an audiophile forum anymore, at least not the Music Corner, this rule really doesn't make that much sense. Neither would enforcing it.

Pastafarian:
Well there's lot of place solely devoted to music but this site's reason for being is sound quality. My reading of post 1 is that Mr. Hoffman wishes it to remain that way and I'm bound to agree as that's why I came here.

It's been over a decade and people are still arguing against this rule. I thought we weren't supposed to debate forum rules or question the moderators in public.

If what you say is true, why does the banner when you land on the page say STEVE HOFFMAN MUSIC FORUMS rather than AUDIOPHILE FORUMS? If you read the content, it is primarily discussion about classic rock music, some sound quality stuff, and some fan fiction thrown in. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun read - much in the same way as reading The National Enquirer, but I can't take it too seriously.

Again no response from Grant
But then a question arises: Is it even a rule?

If they knew the forum was going to have the membership that it does now, i'm sure they would have included "audiophile" in the name to ensure that everyone knows what it's all about.
See, back then, this place wasn't really picked up by spider bots, so this place really was a place for audiophiles, and those who were interested in quality sound. But, when the search engines started picking this place up, and having high results in searches, a lot of non-audiophiles came here and joined. That is when the non-audiophiles started to complain about the audiophiles. While non-audiophiles are certainly welcome here, Steve Hoffman has made it clear that audiophile concerns are part of the discussion here.
The reason the "fill out your profile" request, then rule, was incorporated is because we were getting members who would complain about the sound of something. yet, when you go to look at their equipment profile to see why they were complaining, they would have nothing listed. That is why Steve came up with it. If he masters something, he hears his project one way in the studio (and, anyone who has followed his methods should know how he works, and what gear he uses), and some bozo comes up with something way different, he just wants to know why. It's not a difficult request. It's his business, and he needs to know that we are basically hearing what he's hearing.
His rule is not meant to be nosey or exclude anyone. We all know there are some jerks who live to ridicule others and think they are superior because they own better/expensive gear, so they bully others. Well, that's what the mods are there for.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why people have such a problem with audiophiles, or the idea that they could be one too. If you don't like audiophiles, why hang around in an audiophile-based forum? OK, if you want to talk about music, talk about music. Don't talk audiophile, and don't criticize audiophiles. They were here first. The guy whose name is on the masthead is an audiophile. You don't want to fill out your profile? That's fine too. No one is pointing a gun to your head ordering you to. but, if you don't, you aren't allowed to discuss sound quality.
It's so simple! You want to tell everyone that a CD, record, or download sounds compressed or something? Tell us what you listen to music on so we have some frame of reference. That's all! Why is that so hard for some of you guys to process?

Why can't I or anyone else view your audio equipment then?

Looks like you are one of those people who don't bother to read the thread before commenting.
You can see what I listen to music on if you follow me, and that is also if I let you. However, a couple of pages ago, I listed in right here on this thread! What I have is no secret. It's just that the forum software does not allow anyone to see your profile if you put limits on your profile.
One more thing: I am, by far, not the only one who does this.

On one particular thread which has already moved on many pages.
Not really easy.
Absolutely respect his right to keep that information to himself if he wishes, just makes the rather long sermon on the subject somewhat puzzling.

That is not my fault. Blame the forum software. If you care enough, you can just c/p it for future reference, or something.
Like I said, i'm not the only one who limits who can see their profile. I explained why a couple of pages ago and will not explain it again.

Benno123:
Sorry, but if you’re going to block me or anyone from seeing your equipment list unless you decide we can then why should you care if anyone else lists theirs or not? I don’t care if you limit it but don’t be all high and mighty and tell others they have to add theirs. Telling someone to cut and paste it is a cop out, in the grand scheme of things who cares? The more I read this thread the more I am convinced people listing their stuff are trying to convince people of their importance that exists in their own minds or that some all important stereo system represents the size of their manhood ....
It’s almost like someone applied to be a gort, and was denied, so they feel the need to try and thrust their “authority” on others to validate themselves for the future gort openings ...

You've spent many posts here supporting the rule about listing gear in order to comment on s/q. You personally flout the very same rule, by exploiting a loophole in software, while still commenting on s/q.
Imo the only way to resolve your plain contradiction is to copy and paste your gear from above, on each thread where you discuss s/q. If you don't take the intitiative yourself, instead expecting others to do the pasting for you while blaming the software, I can't see any credibility in your views. It's not a personal attack.
I would happily do the same, as I personally disagree w the execution of the rule. I like the forum and want it to
be great, but I'm at least aiming for some consistency on my own part.
