Even Ken Scott's famous smack down overstates his actual skill level by far. Hooofman couldn't cut a record if his trust funded life depended on it.

Guff has mastered THOUSANDS of cee dees? I call total bullshit. Maybe people more in the know could come up with an actual number, but I'd bet he hasn't more than a couple of hundred (if that). And once again, STeVE is no mastering engineer. He is (or more accurately was) an EQ consultant. He needed to have a real engineer there to do the actual technical stuff. (It's self-congratulatory tripe like this that makes me glad Stereo Central exists. I'd get myself banned over there if I couldn't vent here.) Steve is a 24 karat asshole. (I know you’re already well aware of that fact. I’ve been an SC lurker since the old board.) However, I’ve been wanting to chime in for a while and say: I think you all are giving that idiot too much credit by calling him an “EQ Consultant.” It’s too generous, even if you’re being sarcastic... Maybe he can twiddle a bass & treble knob on a cheap 1970’s stereo. However, he’s not capable of making corrective EQ decisions, let alone dialing in mastering curve. That’s why he needs an M.E. to babysit him. Honesty, I’ve heard his “solo” work and to my ear it sounds shitty. Often, it doesn’t translate too well. I think a teenager using Audacity and pair of headphones can master better than that nitwit. He’s also full of it when he says 16/44.1 cannot replicate analog. 16 bit is oversampled beyond what ANY normal human being can hear and has no problem reproducing 20 to 20. Also, it’s transparent to use for all sound reproduction. Therefore, if MR Flat Transfer is pumping shit quality in, that’s exactly what he’s gonna get back. Don’t blame the format if you don’t like what you hear. Anyone with audio engineering basics can call him out on his bullshit. I ask, where is the science to back up his claim? What tests and measuring equipment did he use to validate? Those golden tin ears of his? He’s f*cking delusional and pumping out Tom Scholz style nonsense in an attempt to impress clueless Shites. In fact, there’s a way one can calculate analog into digital bit rate. From my understanding, the best analog machine can produce approximately 12 or 13 bits. Gee Steve; Next time blow your “bad breath of life” on those “16 bit drink coasters” before you send them to your jizz guzzling fans in Shiteville. Please fill out your gear profile.

I wonder what an EQ consultation actually involves. 30 seconds of knob action?

I wonder what an EQ consultation actually involves. 30 seconds of knob action? Glad to help. Basically, it is rather simple: 1. a totally fictional persona including a false resumé. 2. your personal manifesto as to how your sheep are to properly enjoy music. Yours is the ONLY way, bucko. 3. an Internet presence to broadcast/sell your alleged supreme oeuvre The key is, of course, a Stalinesque grip on the Internet presence. Dissenters are quickly identified, called out and quietly hustled out the back gate. The offending posts are immediately cleaned up. Voilà: EQ consultant. Tough to argue with success.

While compiling STeVE quotes for a different thread, I came across this nugget from Mar. 3, 2007: The old light was really, really bright. Hard on prints they say.. But it explains why the rather dense Tech prints look so dark when projected with the weak light of today. You know, Disney used the NEGATIVES to cut trailers. If you look closely at SNOW WHITE the scenes in the restored print that were used in the trailer are DUPES now. So, a Disney trailer from that time is an accurate look. All true IB Tech trailers were made from original matrices (usually with alternate scene shots!) The best thing about that night at the Academy screening of THE WIZARD OF OZ was watching Ray Bolger watch himself on screen as the Scarecrow. I couldn't take my eyes off of that duo. I would watch him, watch the screen, watch him; couldn't believe that I was sitting right next to him. One of the best nights of my not uneventful life.If this doesn’t make you hate that douchebag just a little bit more, nothing will.

Agreed. Every time you get to a point where you think it's impossible to hate him any more than you already do, the smug prick opens his mouth and raises the bar just that much more.

I wish I could take credit for creating that gleefully stupid phrase, but Hoffman is the one who started billing himself as an "EQ consultant." We just enjoy cramming his comical bullshit right back down the mouth from whence it came.
There is no science to back up his claim because he's full of shit. And I honestly believe that he is deluded and deranged enough to actually believe at least some of the shit talk he spouts.
I hear ya, the EQ Consultant is hilarious I must admit. Hoofy reminds me of a certain type of character from back in the day when Studios would often apprentice young prospects. Sometimes, you’d come across a guy who was an “audio enthusiast type”. However, he really didn’t have the temperament or the natural ability to be an engineer. He would be given a chance and started out on coffee /broom duty. Then eventually one day he gets a chance to sit in for a mix session. Instead of keeping his mouth shut and paying attention, he starts interrupting the engineer offering to “help” and gives his opinions on matters which don’t concern him at this point. Then at the end of the day, he’s told we won’t need you tomorrow. How he worked his way into Capitol is a mystery to me. initially, wasn’t he suppose to be some sort of A&R intern? If that’s the case, I’m thinking when he got his foot in the door, he may have pulled a grovel to be “Coffee boy” in the engineer dept. Things probably started out ok, but as time went on he started pulling his shit. Perhaps for whatever reason they couldn’t get rid of him? (probably because he’s a lying, manipulating, ass kissing sneaky bastard.) yes I agree, I think he believes his bullshit as well.

One correction, it was MCA, not Capitol. If you read any of the books concerning MCA at this time (there are at least two), it becomes a bit easier to understand how STeVE could get a foot in the door. The biz was in a low point and MCA was the shittiest of the majors. Some of the other shenanigans going on there (mob involvement, financial mismanagement, etc.) suggest there wasn’t a whole lot of oversight going on. I’m sure anyone with a half good line of bullshit could have gotten where STeVE did.
As an aside, I’ve often thought the only reason Sticky Fingers STeVE didn’t get in any real trouble was because about the time he was found out, MCA was busy fighting allegations of being a mob front. I’m sure bringing attention about masters, contract documents and whatever else walking out the door was decided to be a bad idea at this time.

It isn’t so much that STeVe is there or not there for an event, he’s always front and center. Of all he people in the room attending to sit next to Ray Bolger it’s STeVE. Amazing how that always works.
Maybe he drove the limo and instead of money Ray gave him a ticket as a tip?

That's what I figured, as well. I wonder just how many tapes he actually stole.

I imagine that's already been the case for some time now. Probably discusses important things between himself and his sockpuppet personas.
