This is my fav Orbisong and it's not on that 20 greatest hits one (or any other 'best of' i've seen):

The one thing I discovered about Roy Orbison was that The All-Time Greatest Hits at first glance seemed as if it had a rather paltry song count considering how long his career was. When I heard more of his stuff I realized that the compilation got it right. He really only ever had about 20 good songs. Orbison must have had the highest garbage to great song ratio out of anybody from his era. Unlike, say, Bo Diddley or Little Richard, there are no hidden gems to be discovered. Those hits you know really are all there is. He just filled album after album with absolutely forgettable middling material that goes in one ear and out the other — and that is 98% of his decades long career.
That is not an insult, by the way. Those 20 songs are indeed great. Question Mark and the Mysterians really only had the one song, and "96 Tears" is better than most bands' entire worthless careers.
Funny you should mention ? and the Mysterians. A while back I downloaded a 2-disc "greatest hits" thing and although the sound is very good, the material blows chunks. Except for, of course, "96 Tears". So you're on the money there. (A similar thing happened with the Box Tops. A 2-disc download that sounds great is basically garbage except for "The Letter".)
Orbison-wise, I'm nowhere near catalog. I have the Greatest Hits you mention, and I have Mystery Girl, or whatever the name of his final album is. The Hits is a good listen, and Mystery Girl is pretty good too, although it is about 2/3 filler. I certainly don't feel any burning need to go beyond these two titles.

The newer Orbison Ultimate Collection el pee I had to pull a SHiTe move and send back. The first album was off-center, I didn’t notice until I played it and was like whoa! I called Amazon and apologized to them for complaining, the guy laughed and said no worries and sent me a new one. I get it and same problem, way off to the point it sounded really bad. I called again and just asked if I returned if I could get my money back. The guy said yes. He also said since my records show no abuse of the return policy and only then when items have been damaged that I did not need to worry. I told him I was aware of abuse and he said he appreciates my concern but as far as I go I don’t abuse it so no need to worry.

My rule for Roy Orbison is that if it sounds good in a David Lynch film, I’ll enjoy it. So that makes two songs in total.

He really only did one thing well, but he was one of the best at that one thing. But it’d be best to buy 8 copies of everything just to be safe.

I own that big MGM years box (I had an Amazon price error honored that would make a SHite green with envy, heh) and you’re absolutely right. Whenever he tried to get away from “the formula”, it just didn’t work. Listening to that set, you can hear him trying to figure out anything else he could do and failing at it. There’s some interesting, but nothing I could recommend. That said, I like his Sun rockabilly stuff, but I wouldn’t rank it as essential.

I'll just go ahead and be that one guy who prefers his MGM era.

At least Roy Orbison provided you with hours of entertainment when Steve had to ban Shawn and Rob as they had revealed they had done the transfers for a compilation he was taking credit for.

Do you think MYKE knows about this place? Has he reported us to the Gorts? He knows, He has corrected himself on many occasions after reading the poats here. Maybe CHRYS is a member here.

Why MYKE is going to die in absolute penury - so little self-control that it takes him about 90 minutes to convince himself that he wants something he previously decided he didn't want. In this case, it's another remaster of Aja by Bernie Grundman.
