23 Years Ago Today, we lost Rory GallagherOn June 14, 1995, the music world lost a true giant. Irishman and Blues Rock electric guitarist Rory Gallagher died at the far too young age of 47, leaving lots of great music unplayed and unheard. I discovered Rory in 1974 when I happened to tune into the TV show Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in mid broadcast to find this young man modestly dressed in a flannel shirt and jeans, sporting a lion's mane of hair, in mid-song, tearing the hell out of a battered looking Fender Stratocaster. I was immediately sucked in. The next song was Souped Up Ford, off his then current album Against The Grain. That was all it took. I wrote down his name and hit Rory up at the record store the next day. I have never looked back and I have never regretted my decision. If you love Rory, please play some of his music in his honor today. If you are not yet a fan, please head to YouTube, punch up anything in his name, and prepare to be astounded. Rory is one of those artists who I can say without exaggeration, truly changed my life. RIP Rory Gallagher ( 1948-1995) Rory has been on of my all-time favorites since I first read about him in an early 1990s guitar magazine that had a feature on "The Irish Eric Clapton." As a huge Cream/Blind Faith/Dominos fan, teenaged guitar-playing me was intrigued so I sought out some Rory. To my surprise, I found him to be as good, if not better, than my beloved EC. Thus began my Rory fandom and here we are 20+ years later and I still can't get enough of the guy's music.

June 14, 1995 was such a dark, dark day. I saw one of his last shows a few months earlier when he was in a very bad shape which worried his fans a lot. The initial news that the liver transplant was succesful gave hope, but then followed the complications that lead to keeping him in a coma and his untimely death. What a loss. Fortunally we have tons of great music to cherish. I was never so bummed out before when i heard about the death of a musician / artist i admired. 3 months later my son was born....Rory! Long Live Rory Gallagher!

Fortunally I've never heard a single thing by him. Was he Liam and Noel's dad?

Gallagher the watermelon guy? You're thinking of George Carlin. I never paid Carlin much attention, honestly, but my memory of him dates back to the late 70's or early 80's when I was a kid. I remember my friend telling me about a guy who smashed watermelons on stage. He certainly had a large fanbase.

Rory Gallagher doesn't have the ears, pal.
Or anything else at this point.

Christ almighty, if Rory was the Irish Eric Clapton, all of those Northern Ireland concerts would start with "I hate you potato-eating Mick cunts! Long live the British!" and end with riots with a lot of dead bodies strewn all over the place. The few Rory Gallagher LPs in my step-dad's collection were the only things in his collection that weren't crap, and I liked them at the time, but I've never blindly worshipped him like SHites tend to. Never been a big fan of baby boomer blooze, but he was one of the better ones. He wasn't Clapton, which is always a good thing.
When members of Savoy Brown start to die off, there'll be plenty of shaking and screaming in fields...
EDIT TO ADD: Ha! I've just noticed what's written under my username...
