After decades with the world waiting for a decent book about Altamont, we now have the second one in about one-and-a-half years after Mr. Selvin's fine effort: Saul Austerlitz' Just a Shot Away: Peace, Love, and Tragedy with the Rolling Stones at Altamont, which sees the light of day on 10/07/2018.

Sounds like it might be an attempt to whitewash Hunter, though.

Jive comment.
And some people just don't understand the Sixties, and what the "hippie" or "counterculture" meant -- it was inclusive and fought for human rights, even extending to ecology (remember that ) and rights for the American Indian.
If Hendrix had lived long enough to fully embrace the Black Power movement, I fear some of the classic rock crustaceans would have banished him from their record collections.

Unless Saul Austerlitz has unearthed some hitherto unknown evidence of the actual events that led up to his death, Meredith Hunter was not a martyr. The indisputable fact is that he was brandishing a firearm in a crowd of people. Notwithstanding the other transgressions by the Hells Angels that day, I've never read any witness disputing the account of events that the person who killed Meredith Hunter acted justifiably to forcibly disarm an imminent threat to public safety. That was the conclusion of an official inquiry into Hunter's death, and no witness ever contradicted it, either at the time or in the years immediately following.

I am amazed that the whole Hunter thing is actually even debated anymore. We know what happened and have for decades. People who disagree with it are the same as conspiracy theorists to me.

Altamont -- the race factor comes into question because a black man was killed by someone with little authority to do so.

I read an interview with the Author of the new book. From what I got from that the book is all about race. That is basically all he talked about in his interview. He is the type of guy who chalks everything up to racism and then complains about how much racism there is. The type of guy who believes nothing ever happens to anyone who just happens to be black, everything that happens to a black person is because they are black. He compared the Hunter killing to the Rice and Martin killings. Two other killings that fall into that category. In the interview he even calls Trump a racist and insults people who voted for him. He is that kind of guy.

Yes, Hunter charged the stage with a gun. Did a Hell's Angel have some justification to stab and/or disarm him? Probably.
Were the Hell's Angels singling out Hunter for abuse because he had a white girlfriend? Reports attest to that.
Did that justify Hunter running toward the stage with a gun? No.

I have never seen proof of that. That is a narrative for people who make everything about race. As of yet no good argument can be made to support that.
Was it racist when white people at the concert were beat up by the Angels? I know your answer will be no. So why than do you claim as a fact that it was when the same thing happened to a black guy? Some people see race in everything.
He was shot because he was roughed up by the Angels and he pulled a gun. If a white person did that they also would have met the same fate. Do you think Passaro when he saw the gun was worried about race?
Hunter had no problems with the Angels ( as far as I have ever heard ) until he pushed up to the stage. White people there had the same experiences.
I will bet in the book the Author will cherry pick whatever he can to try and back his narrative. he will ignore all else. We will see but that is usually the way guys like him operate.
