Eric Records - new releases - DES or "Digitally Extracted Stereo" versions of 50s classics +Bill Buster is a great guy, he found us at DCC Compact Classics the best sounding tape of CALIFORNIA SUN when we were working on our Surf CD's. I enjoy listening to the two current stereo releases, the Doo-Wop one and the other one (has ELVIS' "Don't" on it). I mean, they won't replace the original mono recordings for me but some of the songs (like DON'T and EARTH ANGEL, etc.) sound really amazing in stereo. DES is many things and is not many things. But to say it is not real stereo is wrong. It is real stereo! How they got it makes no difference. I feel it works on some songs, others not so much but it has been amusing for me to listen to these. I have them both in the car. My kids like the songs as well. They don't give a sh** about stereo but they know a good tune when they hear one. My one complaint on these is that the mastering is too over the top crispy for my liking. I'd cool it with the 8k boost + compression thing. It's really not needed. Other than that, fun to hear. One of my old three-track to stereo mixes is even on these. Guess which one?

Let me guess. Hmmmm. Which one of your stereo mixes... I KNOW! I KNOW! It's the one you ripped off the master tape and spliced in a dub copy onto the reel. RIGHT? DID I GET IT? Ooooooooooo. So what do I win?

Let's go back one short year. STeVE still had the illusion of having a job, so this is what he had to say in his first poat of that very same thread: There is nothing valid about DES. Now, out of work, Daddy changes his tune. Every one of his (many) poats from before AF went kaput attack the DES process with gusto. Now, out of work, he claims to see value in it. Way to get on the bandwagon, STeVE! (Won't do any good, though. Hoffman will remain unemployed.)

Ah yes...if there is one fixed principle upon which SH.tv and STeVe Hoffman's many posts over the years rest, it is that good-sounding music is its own reward and making moral judgments about the details or authenticity of the technical processes involved is boring, pointless, and silly.

If I recall correctly, Steve had several very uncomplimentary things to say about Eric records before he became unemployed. I know a bit about them, it's really just two guys, Bill and Mark, who work their asses off.
I had a shipment from them go missing and they both not only emailed me to help check on its whereabouts, but called me personally to assure me that they would 100% cover any problems with the Postal Service. Quite a bit different from Marsha's petulant defensiveness when confronted with complaints about AF's defective or just poor quality releases. Their work speaks for itself and they're really nice people.
Anybody here who wants to make fun of them, go ahead. I know their releases are niche products for us old guys who still love stuff from the 50s through 80s. They're not getting rich from these labors of love. I enjoy their work.

It seems that the fundraiser has been somewhat of a dud, going on a lot longer than it had in the past, so the funds in the children’s accounts are about out so now STeVE now needs to kiss ass and suck dick to those be shit on in the past. Why doesn’t he beg his buddy Leeann for work? She could hire him to scrub the cum out of her panties that dries up after leaking out of her nasty snatch.

It looks like Grant is chiming in now. In lockstep with Hoofy’s views, as always.

The best part is that STeVE's dismissive comments were recent enough that everyone remembers them. Have they been scrubbed yet? Can we get a GORT? Clean up on aisle STeVe

Eric puts out some good product. Their artwork is a bit cliparty, but nothing like as bad as Audio Futility's.
A good DES mix takes hours of painstaking, dedicated work and good ears.

Does DES differ significantly in effect from Duophonic? I listened to a couple of DES samples, and they were quite re-verby -- a bit like when Duophonic mixes would purposefully introduce a slight latency between left and right channels.

And a good Huffman remastering takes painkillers.
The whole DES process is not perfect. Sometimes the results are shit. But Eric Records has put out a lot of good mixes. This, in addition to gathering some hard to find original mixes as well. For me, the compilations are just a gimmick, whatever. But the overall library of tracks available from them is quite impressive. STeVE is jealous because they take something old and give it a twist, making it new and exciting, whereas he took something old, and made it sound worse.

Does DES differ significantly in effect from Duophonic? I listened to a couple of DES samples, and they were quite re-verby -- a bit like when Duophonic mixes would purposefully introduce a slight latency between left and right channels. Hoofman does not have the skills set to do this -- or the ears. "Digitally Extracted Stereo (DES) [uses] spectral editing and/or sound source separation... The goal of Digitally Extracted Stereo (DES) is not just to create some semblance of stereo; it should be to create stereo mixes that are virtually indistinguishable from stereo mixes created using multitrack session tapes, had they existed. In other words, Digitally Extracted Stereo (DES) mixes should sound like true stereo! If they don't sound like true stereo then they are nothing more than the universally panned "simulated stereo"! A good Digitally Extracted Stereo (DES) mix should have these qualities: Be free of audible artifacts, with distinct, stable positioning of the vocal and instrumental elements. The vocal and instrumental elements should not be delayed in time relative to each other, nor should they sound muffled. Comb filtering and delays should not be used. Should fold down essentially to the original mono source. The only exceptions to this might be some slight added reverb and EQ tweaks used to arrive at a cohesive, lifelike stereo mix. Should not utilize any Digitally Constructed Stereo (DCS) techniques such as copying, looping, pasting, etc. to create the illusion of separation. While some Digitally Constructed Stereo (DCS) mixes sound quite convincing, they do not represent the original musical performance contained in the original mono recording." -- Chris Kissel (July 2017)

I have never heard of this tech before. Interesting stuff. I'll have to check out some of these mixes. Anyone have recommendations?
Gorfs, feel free to move this to "reveal your inner SHite"
