The Grant thread has reminded me of a funny anthropology paper on the subject of audiofoolery, called Golden Ears & Meter Readers. I've uploaded a copy here. Here's an extract from the author's interactions with one middle-aged real estate agent called Jack: The author later speculates that Jack had probably tried to balance his speakers on the tennis balls -- apparently this was a hot tweak in the late '80s.

I was waiting for the payoff, as in the guy had put on a CD at some point without Jack knowing. With Jack then aurally imploding at his existential crisis.
Never came.
