There's a $30 two el-pee edition of Birth of the Cool Era Miles. 2nd el-pee is digitally sourced radio broadcasts. And Fremer comes out swinging, with a 1 star review. (He changes it to 4 stars once the SHiTes say he's too angry.) The problem with the whole thing, it's digitally sourced. These 70 year old recordings are never going to be sonic marvels, but whatevs. He recommends buying a $100+ version and putting it in the new packaging. SHiTEs call him out and his new solution appears on AnalogPlanet. www.analogplanet.com/content/after-outrage-umes-birth-cool-reissue-reconsideredLong story short, he still recommends you buy this new "audio abortion" But supplement it with a German bootleg vinyl probably sourced from the RVG CD. To recap: Vinyl sourced from digital is horrible, and the new rekkids sound like muddy digital shit, so his recommendation is to buy it anyway and also buy a CD sourced bootleg. I am far from an audiophile, and I don't fuck with vinyl. The RVG is probably as good as these sessions will ever sound. Further there are roughly two hundred better Miles Davis albums. (This has to be a SHiTe favorite, because it sounds so damn white.) But Mr. Analog purity is sure willing to bend over backwards to keep both his audience and benefactors happy. He never even says not to buy the damn thing.

In his rebuttal to Fremer's review, I wonder if Steve will hear Mazzy's comment about the Hoffmanites creaming their jeans over his remasters. Heh.

God damn that fucker in that video is annoying. Makes me never want to listen to Birth of the Cool again or see Dave Brubeck.
The RVG is great. Done.

The RVG was the first time the Masters were used since the 78s, and does indeed sound better than the 1998 edition. One of the biggest bangs for your buck in the RVG series, in my opinion. But also the 1998 complete sounds fine.
What blew my mind about Fremer's bullshit is that he rages against this new vinyl release because the second disc was sourced from the same CD quality files as the 1998 edition, plus the main album was digital, but then he turns around and tries to get audiophools to buy a boot that was probably made from the 1998 CD. For Christ's sake, audiophools, just buy a fucking CD already. The recordings in question are 70 years old, and sound quite good for their age, but they are hardly audiophile recordings.

The musical content is superb --I'm no jazz maven but I can understand why these recordings are legendary. And it introduced me to Gerry Mulligan whose overall career is very impressive. But hi-fi it really isn't.
Interestingly that's secondary to the soothing wind that blows through the breath of life, to Fremer and the denizens of Hooferville. Where audiophile becomes audiophool.

I shall therefore seek out those radio performances forthwith!
