Fuck me; this is a guy who used to have his name on the backs of major labels' releases. Heh. Really? Which major labels would those be?

Hey, wait a minute...
Checking those famous ceedees by Buddy Holly, and the Mamas and Papas, MCA apparently didn't put Our Host's name on the back prior to his being frogmarched out the door (allegedly). The breath of life remained an acquired taste until he became revered in the biz.
The 64-pt bolded font treatment didn't start, I guess, until DCC days. And label-wise surely they didn't count as a 'major'. I guess I was just blinded by the hype, like so many other dupes.

His name isn't on any of the Who releases he supposedly mastered, either, nor the Steely Dans. Some of these versions are very difficult to ascertain which are "his". How much of an affect he actually had on the sound of those discs has to be called into question.

Can someone explain where his reputation comes from? According to my Discogs profile, I own over 4200 recordings. A search of those LPs/CDs/cassettes for Hoffman’s name brings up zero results. Yet there’s an entire message board of followers for this never-was. Howie Weinberg is a mastering credit I can remember seeing on a crazy amount of classic records dating back decades, and I’ve never seen any mention of him on that site, but theoretical Cha-Cha compilations that STeVe’s working on are huge points of discussion for those no taste motherfuckers.

But... but... he's revered in the biz! THE BIZ! Have I been played for a phool???

I’ve said it elsewhere here, but the only thing in my record collection (that features fairly heavily the sort of boomer shit he’s supposedly known for) with the Hoffman credit on it is that song he wrote (or appropriated, it turns out) that was covered by Pixies. I did have a White Stripes LP he mastered and a CD of Who rarities from Japan that was apparently his work, but neither stood out as anything more than normal quality.
Maybe this Bucko don’t have the ears.

Hoffman mastered Who's Missing, but had nothing to do with Rarities vol. 1 or 2. More likely he only compiled Who's Missing. He was off the case for the follow up, Twos Missing. What he actually did with Meaty Beaty and Whos Next is unclear. Meaty is all over the place from track to track, and his Whos Next is very similar to the original MCA anyway. I'm not sure he really had access to the actual masters for any of the above.

He also tried to compile Buddy Holly's Missing and Ray Charles' Missing.

Normally, mastering is a one-person job. But even though Audio Fidelity was hardly rolling in money, AF still found it necessary right to the bitter end to pay a second engineer to "assist" on all of Steve's supposed mastering projects. Which makes me suspect that the older albums with solo Hoffman mastering credits probably had similar collaborators/babysitters who just didn't get officially credited, and that any claim Steve had about mastering albums that don't credit him at all is potentially quite dubious.

His name is on the back of the CD booklet for the Buddy Holly compilation he did for MCA in 1985. I read a review of it in some music magazine back in 1985, and they did use his name in the review. That's almost his entire claim to fame though. www.discogs.com/Buddy-Holly-From-The-Original-Master-Tapes/release/2567498I've just grabbed a screenshot of the relevant part of the CD from eBay. This is about as "famous" as Hoofy ever got.

Remember that the credit was enough to get Monsieur Hoffman revered by a record store owner in Nice, France.

Surely there must be something left for our boy to remasterbate. The Poppy Family's Greatest Hits? Homer & Jethro's Big ol' Barrel o' Laughs? There must be a barrel-scraping somewhere that's waiting for some creamy midrange.
