What is Olivia Newton-John's Signature Song?

Bobby Morrow is something else...
Look, I like a pretty woman as much as the next guy, but Morrow's unfaltering devotion is remarkable. At least he isn't talking through a Newton-John avatard like he usually does; I feel like I am talking to someone in drag when SHites do that. He truly seems incapable of embarrassment...
You lucked out Bobby. In the history of all the stupid things SHites wonder about on that forum, not one has ever wondered "what is Olivia Newton-John's signature song?" You are the absolute first to ask that. Nice job.
I’m going for I Honestly Love You. Olivia would definitely choose it. Unfortunately it’s a track I’ve never cared for, but it’s a song Olivia has sung in concert ever since she recorded it. Rumour has it when she does her weekly grocery shop she sings it there too.
I’d like her signature song to be Magic.. It was one of her biggest hits and always does well in polls here. I think it’s the best all round pop single she ever did. However, I reckon I Honestly Love You (and possibly Physical and the Grease Songs) will prove to be it’s undoing.
I love how he knows what "Olivia" would choose. I am amused by the has-to-be-apocryphal claim that she sings it aloud when she grocery shops nearly as much as I am amused at the thought that it would be a "rumor", furtively whispered in the shadows...
Little does she know the song will be undone by the pesky "I Honestly Love You" and "Physical"....mwahahaha
You deserve a reacharound for that!! These two need to get a hotel room...
I think of the "pre" period, "I Honestly Love You" is the signature song. Of the "post" period it is probably "Physical."
But like you Mr. Morrow, I think "Magic" would be a good choice. I don't care much for Physical, but as I have stated many times, IHLY ranks right up there in that wonderful pre-Grease body of work.
Actually I really think it's "Soul Kiss." lol
He is referring to the chaste country girl career and the (much shorter-lived) slut in leather career. Here we have two of the biggest Newton-John mooncalfs on the planet, and they both hate her biggest songs... Note how John Adam (who doesn't have a girl avatard; he uses a very homoerotic looking boy that I don't recognize) uses abbreviated song titles, as true fans usually do. "IHLY" means something to these guys. And like a true fan, he has to include a little in-joke about "Soul Kiss" which I presume is yet another Newton-John song these superfans hate.
It's clear that Bobby can't handle sexual innuendo from a woman, especially if it involves physical exercise...
Magic is a much better pop tune, quality of the song and performance. "A Little More Love" is a much better song. "Hopelessly Devoted To You" is a much better song.
But I totally agree, it was her biggest hit, but like many artists, not necessarily their best hit!
Isn't any #1 single a stroke of luck and a novelty? Bobby offers some social anthropology:
I can't tell if he is off his rocker or just stupid. "Physical" encapsulates the emergence of "good quality" videos?? "Physical" encapsulates the 'aerobics phase'?? What does this mean? Did Newton-John have an "aerobics phase" or is he referring to the zeitgeist? If it is the latter, wouldn't Jane Fonda have encapsulated it a lot better? The dawning of MTV?? MTV was still a twinkle in its mama's eye when Physical finally came off the charts...
It's a good list to draw from for everyone. It has the early British hits, the American hits and soundtrack songs. The first 15 songs could be an American greatest hits collection! There should be something for everybody.
Gosh, what Olivia Newton-John song does John Adam want to hear every day? "I'll be down for breakfast in a minute, hon... I'm not done with my daily dose of "Have You Never Been Mellow"...
If I were to choose the single that I think is her all-round best recording, "MAGIC" is my choice. It´s more or less perfect, and she sings it so well.
Other favourites would be "DON´T STOP BELIEVIN´", "PLEASE MR. PLEASE", "XANADU" and her cover of Dolly Parton´s "JOLENE", but "MAGIC" is the perfect Olivia single for me. Too bad it´s wasted in the movie.
Jarleboy not only has "boy" as part of his name, he has a girl avatard (the insufferable Janis Ian; where do theses guys find their taste?) He also writes "SONG TITLES" all in caps with quotation marks... Yes, too bad the classic "Magic" was wasted in the movie that made it a #1 hit. Another superfan who doesn't like his heroine's work...
Of course you could have. I would love to know which Olivia Newton-John songs are more serious than "Xanadu". Why is the "only possible answer" Physical?
Life is fucking hard sometimes. I wish her "signature song" (could there be a more meaningless phrase?) was "Have You Never Been Mellow" too, but that stupid public or whoever assigns signature song designation went with the obvious.
Her essence, no less...
Well, I guess there's no chance of "Physical" ever being enjoyable again then, is there? By the way, how come these ding-dongs haven't noticed that "Let Me Be There" and "If You Love Me, Let Me Know" is the same fucking song?
You are forcing me to better explore her 78 to 81 output.
Start exploring pal, or bullet in the head. You know the drill.
Yes, it pioneered the use of using speeded-up video in order to make people laugh. That was an achievement. Or maybe he likes it because it co-stars a fat schlub SHites can relate to?
Better than than LMBT, IYLMLMK, IHLY, P, SK, HDTY, and YTOTIW.
Period. End of discussion. Fuck off Aretha.
The one that pops into my head when someone mentions Olivia is HDTY, NOT Physical.
My second choice would be Magic.
Love this one Livy in B/W.
Greelywinger uses a wedding portrait of him and his mail-order bride as his avatard. I mean, really, who would do that? He also doesn't seem to understand the premise of a "signature song", such as it is.
Thanks David Thanks David
Grease will live on beyond all of us. Think about that.
Wink wink, nudge nudge. Fanboys at play.
Take millennials out of the equation, and it's "Physical".
I was waiting for this. Those goddam millennials ruin fucking everything, including Olivia Newton-John's signature song. What should have been an easy choice is now muddied because of millennial meddling. Because we all know how millennials go gaga over anything "Grease"-related. And I think it is safe to say we all have a millennial in our lives who listens to Olivia Newton-John the wrong fucking way.
Yes, Jaime, a "signature song" should be a song that nobody on the entire fucking planet has heard of.
Yet another superfan who doesn't much care for his heroine's biggest hits.
I love how these guys phrase things. "I've been told..."
See what I mean? "Civilians"... Another guy apparently forced unwillingly to listen to her stupid music.
She sure did Bobby. I loved her metal tunes, and her prog epic, and her funk bombs, and her psychedelic opus, and her abrasive punk phase.
Well, you are in luck dude, 'cause there's this little song called "If You Love Me Let Me Know"...
I'm happy if you are happy Bobby. I am sorry she got into that raunchy stuff, I see it upsets you.
Nothing sickeningly sweet about "Come On Over", right?
So you abandoned Olivia for Judas Priest 39 years ago, and never looked back? Well, now you have come full-circle. It would be fitting for you to die now, dying later will ruin the symmetry.
Judging from your avatard, a fantasy is about as close as you're gonna get to a wife, John.
Look, I like a pretty woman as much as the next guy, but Morrow's unfaltering devotion is remarkable. At least he isn't talking through a Newton-John avatard like he usually does; I feel like I am talking to someone in drag when SHites do that. He truly seems incapable of embarrassment...

I voted for "I HONESTLY LOVE YOU". Mainly for the reasons Bobby outlined, but also because I actually like the song. It´s not my favourite song of hers, but it´s up there. It almost has to be Physical (I see it is in the lead as I write this). It took over the charts and dominated the young MTV. I can think of three other contenders (You're the One I want, If Not For You and Let Me Be There) which were played heavily even after they fell from the charts. While I agree that there are better songs than Physical, it's a catchy song that if not overplayed can be enjoyable.Well, I guess there's no chance of "Physical" ever being enjoyable again then, is there? By the way, how come these ding-dongs haven't noticed that "Let Me Be There" and "If You Love Me, Let Me Know" is the same fucking song?

Pre-Grease it was I Honestly Love You. Then it became Physical. As time goes on it'll eventually be Hopelessly Devoted to You as Grease will live on beyond all of us. Magic is easily the summation of her career. With that, I feel I Honestly Love You has returned and is her current signature song if it hasn't been always. It's a full circle thing and there is a real, true comfort in hearing her sing it these days.
Grease will live on beyond all of us. Think about that.

I've been told the light rock/AC stations that played "Mellow, If You Love Me, Let Me Be There, Honestly, Let it Shine," etc. also played If Not For You. It's definitely a great song for Olivia to have covered.I love how these guys phrase things. "I've been told..."

This comment is the perfect example for why I voted for Physical. When civilians think about Liv, that's the song they think about. Followed perhaps by Grease tunes. It's a good, diverse list, isn't it? She tried a bit of everything. I am sorry she got into that raunchy stuff, I see it upsets you.

I'd say her signature tune is "I Honestly Love You", but I found those early songs sickeningly sweet. When I heard "Come On Over", I rediscovered Liv because she sounded a little more passionate and I followed her regularly from then on.Nothing sickeningly sweet about "Come On Over", right?

I am spinning this now. I had to calculate how many years it's been since I pulled this record out and listened to it. I came up with thirty-nine due to a change in musical taste from Olivia and Neil Diamond to Judas Priest, etc. What a nice sounding album. Sometimes being a teenager with OCD comes in handy. So you abandoned Olivia for Judas Priest 39 years ago, and never looked back? Well, now you have come full-circle. It would be fitting for you to die now, dying later will ruin the symmetry.
