Okay, I’ll expose my ignorance here, but I’m now curious about Van Gelder’s recordings and only have the mid-50s Miles Davis sessions in my collection.
Anyone got some essential recommendations so I can hear more?

Anyone got some essential recommendations so I can hear more? The problem with your request is that Van Gelder’s name is on so many crucial recordings that make up the high points of recorded jazz history and any recommendations will cross over from “essential Van Gelder recordings” to “essential jazz recordings”. So check out Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, and all of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter’s Blue Note recordings for starters and you’ll realize why STeVe is full of shit.

Yeah, he was so horrible that the amount of lauded recordings is long enough to choke a rhino. The best thing that article did was make Steve look like a bigger asshole than we already knew he was.

To pretend he was some talentless lunk with sub-par equipment ruining every performance captured in his studio says more about the antiseptic jazz that STeVe and the SHiTes listen to than anything else.

Me too! (Especially after Hoffman’s “why-don’t-people-like-and-admire- me?” snark.)

I'm playing Cookin' as I type. Where's this horrible sound I'm supposed to be hearing? In their imaginations. That fuckin' Cookin'/ Steamin'/ Relaxin'/ Workin' quadrilogy is some of the best recorded music I've heard, from any genre, any era. Rudy Van Gelder clearly knew his shit, and fuck the naysayers and sour grapes crowd who could only hope to put their names on RVG's work. Looking at you, Hoffman.
