Do the Atlantic Ornette Coleman mono tapes still exist? Supposedly the Coltrane mono tapes were tossed in the 1970s, so if that is true, I would assume that Atlantic tossed the Ornette mono masters as well. I have taken to listening to the Ornette Atlantic discs with the mono switch engaged. I have no idea how "well" these stereo mixes fold down (I have never heard an Atlantic Ornette Coleman mono LP), but I think they sound fine to me this way. I think that most pre-1970s jazz sounds better in mono, dedicated mix or not. I do think that the RVG remaster of Out to Lunch is a lot more vibrant than the 1994 Japanese CD, and the original CD of Conquistador was pretty mediocre. And maybe I am not remembering this correctly, but weren't the RVG editions of Monk's Genius of Modern Music volumes the first time that Van Gelder (or anyone) returned to the actual lacquers the songs were recorded on, rather than tape copies of said lacquers? Both the Monk material and the Bud Powell Vols 1 & 2 sounded better on the later RVGs than the McMasters. The other RVGs with their narrow stereo spread fold down well to mono. I suspect Van Gelder wanted to release that series as mono but EMI/Capitol said no and the narrowing was his compromise. Atlantic released a lot of jazz promos as folded monos so it’s likely that company policy for stereo/mono was that recordings should hold together through a studio mono monitor. The only mono Coleman I had was Shape Of Jazz… and listening to the album nowadays as a stereo digital file I occasionally switch it to mono and I can’t say it sounds any different in any way to my memory of the mono vinyl. But Atlantic did do some weird shit (stereo version of Wicked Picket comes to mind) so it’s likely a case-by-case deal.

I’m still waiting for STeVe to actually create something, not just taking a completed project by someone else and “paint over” it. RVG is still renowned and remembered for his originally created work. What have you created that you’re remembered for, Steve? Fuck you and your SAGgy pussy neck.

My last ban, (or maybe the one before, I can't remember), was for suggesting that Steve was just a proof-reader who corrected a bit of poor punctuation and then took credit for writing the whole book.

This is a great way of putting it. He basically cleans the dirt off the paintings and then claims to be Picasso.

The problem is that his punctuation sucks. Don’t forget the “..” at the end of the sentence. Steve is so good he gets to periods. (No pun intended.)

This is a great way of putting it. He basically cleans the dirt off the paintings and then claims to be Picasso. I can't even give him that much credit. He gets a digital copy of the painting, looks at it, and then says he had lunch with Picasso after his legion of idiots claim that his looking at it makes it the best version of that Picasso.

StEvE is so full of shit. The author of the original posted Reverb.com article (at the top of this thread from 3 years ago) must have quoted sTeEvE to display the ignorance of the man and his ilk, but seems like a waste of space to even quote SH on the subject. In case anyone wants any more info about RVG, here's a PDF scan of an excellent essay/article about Rudy Van Gelder in the 1950's , Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack: Defining the Jazz Sound in the 1950s By Dan Skea (published in 2001). Someone in the comments at the Reverb article linked to it. The author Dan Skea interviewed people who knew & worked with (and presumably ate lunch with!) Rudy Van Gelder. I've been on a Jazz kick the past few months and been enjoying a number Van Gelder recordings and surely others I don't even know or forgot were recorded by him.
