Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Threads Closed Indefinitely
As longtime members of the forum know, when disasters and issues of social upheaval causing widespread existential dread occur, we often allow for a thread in "Off Topic" to serve as an outlet for discussion of the "issue of the day".
Normally, providing such an outlet while also offering some leeway on the rules in such threads is helpful to serve as a lightning rod for some of the anger and frustration that would otherwise show up elsewhere in the forum. In the case of the COVID-19 discussions, we have given it six months, and it is starting to have the opposite effect. Coupled with the concurrent police shootings and protests and the fact that we are in the teeth of the US federal election season, people have been starting to see the leeway they get in the COVID-19 threads and feeling free to grind their political axes in the rest of the forum. In addition to the spillover into other discussions, I and other moderators have been hearing from members who privately indicate that they are staying away from the forum because of these toxic rants.
For these reasons, we are closing the COVID-19 threads indefinitely. This will create a much more straightforward situation for both the moderation team and forum members when it comes to applying the no politics, etc. rules. We also hope that it will re-focus the discussion on music and audiophile discussions.
This will continue at least through the current US election cycle, and we will reassess the situation after that.
Thanks for understanding, friends.
Ken and the SHF Moderation Team

I wish there was a way to hack into the gort conference. That's the party reel I want to see.

I would bet a million Buddy Holly master tapes those members who complained to Ken were Trumpist shitheels, because those Corona threads did not spare their dear leader and his godawful bungling of this crisis.
Looks like its back to the status quo ante, in which right wing political dog whistling is just peachy, just as long as you've ponied up or talk about how much the biz loves daddy.

I wish there was a way to hack into the gort conference. That's the party reel I want to see. Unfortunately on services like xenforo it's nye on impossible. I looked into for another forum that uses similar software decided it didn't want my ongoing presence - the legal problems and the cost involved is not worth it. It would be so great if you could just trick the websites into thinking your entitled to certain user privileges like you can in some game software. Either way - the gorts are fucking dumbos - if you open up any topic on current affairs of course it's going to attract the fucking nutters.

Well, I don't think I really want to see it anyway. It's just funny how Hodgo posted that thing about the gort discussions and then this is what they came up with.
Anyway, like bjorncrosseyed said it's probably the shitheads that were complaining and the normal people who were the problem. (in the eyes of the gort squad)

The covid threads made me appreciate some people I never would have thought I'd like. Like Tim1954, for example. In music threads this guy comes across like the Black Sabbath version of Sondek. Just an unbearably obsessed and bossy superfan. He's the Sabbath expert and nobody can have a different opinion. But in the the covid threads he was great. Kicking Trumptard ass all over the place. I never would have expected it and probably would have guessed he'd be the opposite. But I would have been wrong.

Metalheads are generally far more leftie than most folk who don't mix in our circles if us credit for - the whole movement is built on acceptance and love of people if you actually look into it. No right wing government on the planet has the same core values.

No right wing government on the planet has the same core values. Perhaps metalheads are part of one of the few surviving subcultures today. They often get forgotten about in this sense, because they've never been about fashion or fashionable. It could be that as a result, that scene has not been as co-opted as other style / music cultures. It as in the culture or those associated with it, has been present for decades, but also has an element of the outsider about it and contain those who might have been stigmatised in some way (unlike Trump's brash, alpha male schtick). On the other hand I may be talking bollocks. I don't know much about the scene or the music, but this is how it seems to me.

I'm not seeing everyone in metal is reading Karl Marx on the way to gigs (just look up Phil Anselmo) I think the reality is it's one of the few genres that is for most fans about the music, not a romanticised period of their adolescence. But I'm in serious of danger of coming off as an elitist fuckwit if I continue on that road.

I never posted in that thread, but the mixed messaging and sporadic self important ranting and banning from the Gorfs was rather annoying. One day it was ok to post about police brutality, then suddenly people were getting banned for doing the same. And of course this ambiguity was triggered by Hoofy's memes, slogans and political comments he would post every so often. Then when people jumped on Hoofy's bandwagon, they got shot down by the Gorts. What a cluster of a forum.

Hoofy posting political bullshit annoyed me no end - especially no-one it was stuff that would have got me a banning order.
