I checked Twitter first thing today to see what the latest instalment of the apocalypse has in store and saw Frog Chorus was trending. Some beatard asked Twitter to name a song that McCartney wrote that’s as good as Imagine and he got massacred with a unanimous vote of Frog Chorus being better than that turgid, hippy bollocks. It definitely brightened my day.

I have always disliked Imagine. The first time I heard it, I was riding around with my late friend Larry and his girlfriend Charmaine in his new Dodge Charger. We were doing some really strong acid. When the song came on his radio (first time we'd ever heard it) I looked over and he was blubbering as he was driving. I asked what was wrong and he said something like "This song is so fucking beautiful, man!" I suggested we go to nearby Waverly Park and stop driving.
Sounds kinda like a Steve tale, huh?

I guarantee I heard it before, but the first time I can really recall hearing it was 9/12/2001. It definitely had some power in that moment.
That Friday was the first time I heard America Pie (outside of a car commercial). Both were on the supposed "ban list" of songs.

That list of Imagine covers looks a little padded. Who the fuck is “Peter”, and why does Petula Clark get counted 3 times (is that the tape, ceedee and vinyls editions?). What a douche.

Just tried it again and saw someone/thing called Snafkins. Wtf??

The version by Queen + Paul Rodgers is not in the list, but I think it's been released on DVD. It was recorded live at Hyde Park in 2005, a week or so after the 7/7 bombings. I was there and it was fucking awful.
It sounds dramatic (and it is) but that whole concert was one of the first time (as a humourless rock music fan) I felt let down by music, after 20+ years of waiting to see Queen in some form or another in concert. It certainly taught me to give less of a shit about missing out on stuff.
