I like the record just fine. What I don't like are King Crimson fans. I guess I'm a lot like Robert Fripp in that sense. Fripp loves his fans. I hear he's personally denting the boxes. |

The top left corner of the outer slipcase is dented so I've got to return the thing. :realmad: I’m in Colorado and I just received my box set from Amazon UK today. They shipped it in just a plastic bag. So the box was beaten to pieces. Literally there are punctures in the box set and all the corners are dented. So I’m trying to reach Amazon UK to get them to do something about it. But trying to reach anybody from the United States is almost impossible. I’ll keep trying and keep people posted on what the result is. I should’ve known. I got a notice from them saying new date for shipping was Nov 20th. Ouch ! :shake: Lovely. That means since I'll be out of town for Thanksgiving, I'll have to worry about it sitting in front of my apartment door for days without someone walking off with it. I don't think Trainspotting has to worry. Once the thief realizes that it's just a bunch of beat up King Crimson bullshit they'll put it back. |

As least ItCotCK is an enjoyable listen. I'm going through Pitchfork's Top 100 Albums of the 1970s (I'm a list guy - sue me) and threw on 'Starless & Bible Black' and it's completely soulless crap. The presets on my keyboard have more soul.

My taste in music is severely limited compared to many here, but aside from Court the only Fripp I can still enjoy is his sideman work on Here Come The Warm Jets.

As least ItCotCK is an enjoyable listen. I'm going through Pitchfork's Top 100 Albums of the 1970s (I'm a list guy - sue me) and threw on 'Starless & Bible Black' and it's completely soulless crap. The presets on my keyboard have more soul. Isn't all King Crimson soulless? In the Court of the Crimson King is like the Moody Blues goes to junior college; Starless and Bible Black is like Henry Cow demoted from Cambridge to junior college, with a huge stick shoved up its ass as a parting gift. Those are not compliments, but white boy rock is a minefield fraught with lots of shameful time-wasting anyway. That said, Starless and Bible Black has a few things going in its favor: 1) Not too many vocals, so there are fewer crappy lyrics to endure — and King Crimson have consistently featured the worst lyrics of all time. 2) Not too many vocals, so there are fewer crappy King Crimson vocal stylings to endure — and King Crimson have consistently featured the worst vocalists of all time. 3) No matter how many times you listen to side two, you won't ever remember any of it. This matches my take on Starless as well. |

Eh, I like King Crimson enough to have all their proper albums in those fancy surround sound editions, and saw them three times over the last few years, but I wouldn't put them in any sort of category that involves me rescuing their records (or even members) from a burning building; they average one good song per album, and a bunch of less good ones which mask the truly shit songs that are on every album. I think people like the idea of King Crimson more than the actual music - pretty sure that's Fripp's position too. But I can't begrudge him earning a decent amount of cash at long last even if he's had to slightly dilute his vision (which wasn't that interesting to begin with TBH).
I also enjoy Fracture on side two of Starless & Bible Black but that's because I heard it at an impressionable age.

I'm more partial to Larks and Red. Starless seems a bit uneven to me, but the reduced singing is definitely a plus.
I've recently rediscovered Islands. It's mostly shite, but surprisingly redeems itself in the final third, approaching a near Spiritualized-level grandeur in the closing track.
