I gotta ask, cuz I just don’t get it. Why did his Christmas message have to be all about the fucking military? Can’t this idiot do anything without mentioning “the troops, the troops, the troops”. I will never understand Americans’ obsession with military. I’m so sick of honouring veterans at every sporting event when there are doctors and nurses on their feet for 20 hours a day saving lives and get fuck all recognition. Happy new year. He knows where his bread is buttered... I just poated in the Fat Mangler thread about this, but this is the better thread to mention this part... I have an uncle like this. I'm honestly shocked he doesn't fellate a veteran at any chance. However, never spent a DAY serving this country. The irony is that two of his brothers actually signed up in the 70s. Maybe he feels guilty. Maybe he's pissed the Democrats care about someone other than the white working man. But he calls me, wondering when I'm gonna stop by again. Because I don't want to sit in the same room as someone like Strat Mangler and hear about how Donald Trump, always a "true man of the people and champion of the working class", is the greatest president since Washington. So Trump knows everytime he says "troops!", guys like my uncle soak their panties and start to drool.

I have interviewed veterans through the VA, and a vast majority of them hate people coming up and thanking them for their service. They hate how people don't care about their experiences, just the abstract idea of vetersn-ness.

The fetishization is relatively recent, and 9/11 had a whole lot to do with it. It's ironic, since the percentage who have served or have a family member who has served is at an all time low. I'm old enough to remember the national anthem not being played minutes before the sporting event begins, and certainly not televised. No massive flyovers, no surprise "look who came home" setups, none of it. 18 years of pointless unwinnable war has done little to diminish it, as well.

Pardon my SHiTEy-ness, but I served tables years ago, and we had a regular who came in with his wife. Well, he mentioned being in Vietnam, but didn't go flashing his military ID for the discount. I had to respect that. So I treated him to his choice of dessert and sat at the table with him, telling me about the shit he went through there, including snakes hung up to underground tunnel entrances and shit. After all that, his wife walks up to me in tears, saying "No one has ever treated him like that before. Thank you so much". Like you described, they get tired of the empty "thank you's" from fat slobs who think Donald fucking Trump is the answer to all this country's ills. Guy just wanted someone to talk to. I'm glad you brought that up. That perfectly describes the "Americaner Than Thou" bullshit that's been happening for almost 20 years now.

I'm glad you brought that up. That perfectly describes the "Americaner Than Thou" bullshit that's been happening for almost 20 years now. I worked with a guy that served in Vietnam when I was in high school and had a job at a car wash. Everyone told me just not to bring "that shit up," because it pissed him off. The Deer Hunter and all that stuff were the big movies at the time, and the draft had finally ended so that's what a lot of people talked about, but I was told in no uncertain terms to leave it with him. One day it unexpectedly rained, so the wash had to close down and we were the only two working. He told me to wait inside the cash register area with him and if it stopped raining in an hour we'd open back up. Some old song came on the radio and he mentioned how he liked to get high to that and wondered if a kid like me knew where to get a joint on short notice (uhh...my pocket?). We got high, he bought some beers and he told me about a lot of stuff I was very fortunately not going to have to deal with. I really liked him, and when I finally gave up that high school job I actually gave him two weeks' notice. He told me some crazy and weird stories. I have a feeling I'd have been a draft dodger. Fighting for your country is one thing, but fighting because some rich assholes want more money isn't something I'm willing to do.

Because his voting base likes shit like that. He knows what red meat to throw to them. The U.S. spends more on military than the next 10 countries combined. Now this numb nuts wants more money for the military in this years budget. We can't have modern infrastructure or more money for education, or pay down the debt these Republicans scream poor "oh we can't afford it!" but we have a unlimited amount of money for the military, and stupid shit like walls and his Golfing trips to his resort in Florida that we pay for (American Tax Payer) and he profits on.

Trump the Commander In Chief in a war with Iran. Just let this sink in a little bit. When will this nightmare end? Help us all.

Christ. Every fucking day I get more embarrassed being a US citizen. I feel like apologizing to someone. Anyone. Everyone. Every day. And I fought for this country.
