Let us look at rock sub-genres, and then compare The Beatles to a band that gets .0001% of the ink:
Power Pop - they obviously released proto-power pop firsts with Please Please Me. However, they didn't do the style that much, The Pretty Things were the main influence of the first true blue power pop band IMO, The Easybeats.
Garage Rock - The Beatles had some garage feel in earlier rock tracks like Anytime at All and Twist and Shout, however Joey Ramone said that The Pretty Things "invented garage bands" with songs like LSD.
Hard Rock - The Beatles had some hard edged metallic tracks and riffs like Day Tripper, however The Pretty Things stole The Stones Bay Boy thunder with an even more shocking look/lifestyle in 1964 and forced The Stones to toughen up even more, and sabotage The Pretties. Keith Moon worshiped Vivian Prince.
Folk/Rock - they certainly had a lot going for this with the Rubber Soul era and early acoustic tracks. However, if The Pretty Things didn't turn down Mr. Tambourine Man there is a chance it never would have fallen into The Byrd's lap. However, Dylan admitted a big Beatles influence when he went electric, however he also name dropped The Pretty Things in the song after Like a Rolling Stone and hung out with them.
Psychedelic Rock - The Beatles certainly opened the floodgates here in 1966 and 1967, however they have nothing in 1965 as psych rock as Can't Stand the Pain by The Pretty Things. However, The Beatles did create one of the greatest psych rock mini-suites with A Day in the Life, however, The Pretty Things had one of the greatest psych rock mini-suite singles with Defecting Grey, however The Beatles really blazed an influential path with Sgt. Pepper, however, The Pretty Things created the first rock opera a year later.
Prog Rock - The Beatles used created measure changes like Happiness is a Warm Gun and Side 2 of Abbey Road, however David Gilmour adores the even more experimental SF Sorrow, and claimed Parachute begat Dark Side of the Moon.
Metal - The Beatles butched up in 1967-68 when recording The White album with metallic songs like Monkey and Helter Skelter, however at the time John, George and Ringo were witnessing sessions by The Pretty Things when they recorded proto-metal like Old Man Going, and their riffy metal attitude goes back to Buzz the Jerk and Roadrunner. Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Bonham were Pretty Things fans and friend.
Glam - Presumably Bowie took the Billy Shears idea and ran with it for Ziggy, however Bowie wrote the Glam anthem Oh Your Pretty Things, considered Phil May "God," covered 2 of their songs on Pin Ups, and was front row when Phil swapped gender pronouns......in 1964!!!!!!
Punk - The Beatles fast pop sound found its way into every early punks ear, however The Pretty Things were the first concert of Johnny Rotten and Mick Jones, and were admired by Iggy, Clash, The Pistols and Joey Ramone who said they were the biggest influence on him. Raveups like Alexander reveal a need for speed.
Alternative Rock - The Beatles wormed their way into Kurt's ear and was integral to the sound, however the metal edge of The Pretty Things makes for some 2nd hand influence plus Kurt had acknowledged liking the band.
Brit-pop - Oasis are obvious Beatles worshipers over any other band, however Noel said hearing The Pretty Things melted his brain.
So all in all, The Beatles were pretty influential to rock sub-genres, they should totally be put in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.
