Entire Steely Dan catalog of cutting master tapes shot down by USSR on Korean Air Lines Flight 007

It was 1983, and a New York to Seoul plane was shot down by the Soviet Air Forces after a navigation error by the KAL pilots.
I remember seeing it on the news and was pretty shocked. All those poor people. The flight was shot down by a Soviet Sukhoi Su-15 Interceptor killing 269 people.
What I didn't realize at the time (and was of small matter) is that the Steely Dan master tape catalog was deadheading to Seoul, newly licensed by the MCA Records branch in South Korea. This shipment consisted of 14 10 inch reels of 15 ips Dolby A master copies, intended for record cutting.
To the surprise of all of us, about, I dunno, a year later, most of these tapes arrived back at our headquarters, salvaged from the Sea Of Japan. They were dumped on my desk first, looking like they had survived the end of the world and at first I wasn't sure why they were coming back to us or the nature of the salvage.
But, when I examined the paperwork, to my confusion, I read "Salvaged from Korean Airlines Flight 007" on the paperwork and, very surprised (freaked out, actually) called our International Desk. Mr. Bill Grady came in, looked at the remains of the tapes, scratched his head and said (in a matter of fact voice) "well, I already reordered everything so let's razor blade these."
I wanted to bury them on the back lot with a headstone but instead, we bladed them, threw them in the dumpster and tried to forget about it. Today I would have for sure held a service or something. The only survivors of that horrible flight were the Steely Dan tapes...
