I would like to quote BOTH of these comments, but sadly only the second comment will quote.
I was THREE when I started listening to records and buying records. My most cherished items were my records and my stereo that I got for my 7th birthday. So I can say with 200% certainty, that some kids DO start early! Hell, I got records for my 4th birthday in 1980! KISS "UNMASKED" (I received "Dynasty" the following Christmas) and ABBA "Super Trouper". They were "late" birthday presents, but still birthday presents. On my actual birthday I got a really cool train set where you put oil in the train and it blew smoke. Loved that thing.
I can still clearly remember walking to the shopping centre with mum to buy the records. Mum also bought my sister and I some "record bubblegum". They came in a little cardboard replica of the popular albums of the time. I remember getting Super Trouper and Scary Monsters. My sister got the UNMASKED one and something else. I remember wanting Scary Monsters because I LOOOOVED Ashes To Ashes and played it all the time. I also thought the cover was really cool.
I owned over 500 records by 1990.
I sadly went off music when the 90's came around. I hated and still hate rap. I hated the electronic Euro Trash and I especially hated the depressing garbage that was "grunge". My love of games quickly overtook my love of music, especially once I bought my MEGA-DRIVE in 1991. I did not find a real love of music again until I went to Japan in 2004 and started listening to Jp music. Japan still had actual rock bands and good "pop" music. I especially latched onto Utada Hikaru and my favourite, Hamasaki Ayumi. So, so glad I got to see them live.

Are you people kidding? I was not f**king BRAGGING, I was using it to higjlight the fact that music was my biggest love from the time I was three!
I don't think you had to be an "aristocrat" to buy records for 25c and 50c from the markets we visited every Saturday. Those 500 records were singles and albums. I used to save my pocket money/birthday money/Christmas money etc to buy records I wanted. I also always received records for my birthday and Christmas because everyone knew that is what I wanted.
Talk about arrogant, rude people in this thread. People were claiming that no 4 or 5 year old is into rock or pop music, I was refuting that point with my own story.
You know nothing about my life or childhood, so keep your rude comments to yourselves.

Thank you.
I should have mentioned in that original post that at 3 when I started listening to records, I loved mum's Beatles singles and EP's. She only had three albums; With The Beatles, Beatles For Sale and Sgt. Pepper. My sister and I LOVED Beatles For Sale! I still do. The Beatles cartoon was running on TV in 79, and we used to wstch it. That is what lead me to mum's Beatles records. I clearly remember seeing Baby's In Black and one of my very favourites, No Reply on the cartoon. I liked With but not as much as For Sale. Sgt. Pepper I did not like much until I was 10 in 87 when the 20th Anniversary release was out and gave it a listen again. I was hooked!

I was already into music before the cartoon anyway. I am embarrassed to say that I liked ABBA. My Grandfather gave me Waterloo, The Best of ABBA, ARRIVAL and Voulez-Vous which I loved. Although ARRIVAL and Voulez-Vous were my favourites. As I already mentioned, I received Super Trouper as a late 4th BD present in 80 and bought ABBA with money I received from a friend of mum's for my 4th birthday.
Bought The Visitors in 81 when it released and also bought THE ALBUM in 81 with BD money. I can also remember getting Greatest Hits Vol.2 in 81 when we went to a record shop and were allowed to buy a record each. I bought the GH Vol.II record and my sister bought ONJ's Physical.
Anybody that has seen Muriel's Wedding knows how horribly uncool it was to like ABBA in this country post 1980. It really started after the tour in 77 I think. I still cannot listen to an ABBA record unless I am on my own because I am too embarrassed.
I can also remember that the first single I bought with my money was Ebony and Ivory. Ack, I hate that song now! Sister bought Make A Move On Me. I can ALSO remember the 1st 12" single myself or my sister bought, it was "Don't Go" by Psuedo Echo. That was my sisters. Quickly followed by "Stimulation" by Wa Wa Nee.

Sorry, but no. My mum did not like ABBA. She had The Winner Takes It All single and that was it. Read my follow up post, I already had Waterloo, The Best of ABBA, Arrival and Voulez-Vous given to me when I was 3 as well as a bunch of singles and cassettes.
As for KISS, I liked their music. Mum had I Was Made For Lovin' You and Shandi singles which I played to death. I had not even seen KISS when I was playing I Was Made For Lovin' You. It was in 1980 when they were here for the UNMASKED tour that I really knew what they looked like. I still remember seeing them performing Talk To Me on Countdown, and that was when I wanted the album. My sister and I did both have KISS dolls as well. I had Peter, I think she had Ace or maybe Paul. As I said before, I received Dynasty for Christmas the following year.
Shandi, like Ashes to Ashes which was my VERY favourite song at 4, are still favourites of mine to this day. I DID think the Ashes to Ashes film clip was scary though!
I have never seen Yellow Submarine and it is not how I started listening to mum's Beatles records. I had played the EP's, my favourite of which was A Hard Day's Night. I think my favourite single was Ticket To Ride and I Wanna Hold Your Hand.
I started listening to the With The Beatles and Beatles For Sale records around the same time, but seeing the cartoon with No Reply and Baby's In Black led me to listen to For Sale A LOT because I loved those songs. Eight Days A Week, I Don't Want To Spoil The Party and I'll Follow The Sun were other favourites, but I love the whole album except for Words of Love which annoys me. That Australian Beatles For Sale cover is very nostalgic to me.
So, it is rather insulting if you are calling me a liar.

I should have mentioned that I also loved my Nan's "The Platters' Greatest Hits" record when I was 4. She could keep her extensive collection of Sanatra records (yuck!) and "Perry Como's Greatest Hits", but I loved that Platters record.
Because I started at three, it blows my mind when a young people say they don't know who "someone" is. There is a guy I work with who does not PRINCE! IT'S PRINCE! How could you not know PRINCE?! Most ypung people in the world these days do not care about anything from before they were 10. Again, it blows my mind.... They have the entire history of the world litterally at their fingertips, but would rather use it to bully people or send pictures of their bits to people.

What rubbish. His generation of music is what he says it is. I started buying records when I was 3, in 1980. I was playing my mum's Beatles records at 3 as well. So I was not only into new music of the time, but also some 60's and 70's stuff.
So are you telling me the 90's and not the 80's was "my generation"? Because by the time I was 13, I started to go off music, because the 90's sucked. I stopped buying CDs by the time I was 16, apart from my favourite band.
The sh**ty 90's sure as hell was not my generation. It was only when I started buying Japanese music in 2001 that I discovered my love of music again.

Listen to Mr Know-It-All here!
I could not give a crap if you believe I started buying records at 3 or not, but it's a fact. If you were not intelligent enough at 3 years old to like and buy music, that's your problem. I was. I was given records for my 4th birthday and always at Christmas. My mum bought me a stereo for my 7th birthday, which I cherished.
As for the 90's, no, it was not my era because I started going OFF music at 13 in 1990. What the hell does "coming of age" have to do with liking or disliking music? Music sucked in the 90's, I had better things to be interested in by the time I was 13, MEGA-DRIVE.
If bands of the time were popular with the op when he was 6 and he liked and listened to them, then YES, it is his era of music! Once again, "coming-of-age" has nothing to do with it.
Christ, typically arrogant and ignorant of one of you lot.

Thank you very much, so true!
My mum was also big into current music. She didn't listen to old music, though. She had some records, such as the 3 Beatles records I played (With The Beatles, BFS, Sgt Pepper), and also a box full of 60's 7" singles and E.P's.
We always watched music programmes of the day. My taste was varied, but very much of the top 40. As a late 4th birthday/early Christmas present, mum bought me KISS UNMASKED and (embarrassingly) ABBA Super Trouper. I remember really wanting Bowie's Scary Monsters at the time, too, but sadly never got it back then. Ashes To Ashes (released on my 4th birthday in the UK, probably a week or 2 later in Australia) was one of my favourite songs, although I thought the film clip was creepy, haha!!
I have always looked at 3 or 4 year old kids throughout my life and wondered how the hell I was like I was. I sure as hell was not a typical child. People on this forum, especially those old, arrogant ones have always called bull when I say I started listening to, and buying records at 3. But as I said further up, I could not give a crap if they believe me or not.

Hahaha!!! Awww, guess what? I quoted you again.
Once again, I could not give a crap you think or believe. It doesn't "upset me", why would the ignorant words of some old nobody on the internet bother me? Guess what again? It doesn't.
Most 3 year olds can't stand up.... Jesus, is everyone you know inbred or something?

That is exactly how it started with me, and what led me to start playing my mum's records. I remember seeing Baby's In Black and No Reply on the cartoon. That is how I started playing Beatles For Sale, then WtB and the singles and E.Ps mum had. Pepper came a bit later.
