alexpop always reminds me of that old power-pop song:
alexpop alexpop kick his fucking head in alexpop alexpop and stamp on it.

Speaking of Miles and remix sacrilege, in almost all cases I prefer to listen to Mark Wilder's remixes (including Miles in the Sky). He didn't make any drastic changes. They are actually pretty faithful to the original mixes, just sounding less muffled. Yeah, unless you are into the idea that the murk is crucial to Bitches Brew, the remixes are fine. Honestly, I don’t have a strong preference either way, except I think the box set where you essentially hear the stereo Miles Ahead being built ruined that for me, for some weird reason. I will say most of those original CDs sounded like shit. Those were overseen by Teo Macero who has been one of the loudest critics of Wilder’s work. Go fig. Miles in the Sky never gets enough love.

The boxes are good for listening to complete sessions, rather than how the stuff was compiled for release. There are plenty of inessentials, particularly on the later boxes, but you know that going in. I like having both options, myself. OtC and Jack Johnson boxes are also a little too juiced for my tastes. The mono box, which is very much recreations, is actually quite good. IaSW is a great set.
Of course, what Wilder did with that stuff is vastly better than what Giles did in making Sgt.Peppers sound like a Flaming Lips album.

I like the On The Corner box. Jabali, Turnaround, Chieftain - and others - are tracks I'm very glad to have. I wouldn't have started the Jack Johnson box with 18 takes of Willie Nelson, on the other hand.

Agree, Teo really could make some magic. BTW, the Cellar Door box smokes. I also really like the Bootleg series. The latest is on fire.

Agreed about Teo. My earlier comment may have seemed dismissive of him but yeah, he was a crucial part of this music, even if Miles kinda shit on him. And I do see his point about the sets being stuff that wasn’t supposed to be released and probably shouldn’t have been.
(I still haven’t heard he quad Bitches Brew. If I ever have a multichannel setup again, I hope to.)

I thought Kind of Blue was the only album on the mono box that was remixed. I'm generally mix-agnostic with the Miles stuff, but I do have to say that the stereo remix of Porgy and Bess is a shrill mess.

Let's not forget Wilder and crew fixing KoB speed issues when they did that remix.

Isn't that the claim, that most of the Miles stuff required a remix from the multi-tracks because the tapes were worn out from over use? At least with the most popular titles, like In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew, I can imagine that being the case. A record like Miles Smiles, which has a very good sounding remix done by Vic Anesini in 1992 (I think), is a bit more mysterious. It would seem that the original master tape was either somehow damaged beyond repair or lost entirely. I fucking love Miles Smiles, just bought myself the latest Music On Vinyl issue for my birthday- I will assume it is this 1992 remix, then.

What's all this wanking over Miles Davis in a BEATLES thread? Everyone knows our trouser-clad rock 'n' roll boys INVENTED jazz. I'm telling the gorts. Just remember, this ain't about da Miles, it's about da Giles. Who INVENTED remixing.

Never heard it, so I have no idea what the source for the Music On Vinyl release is. Miles Smiles is one of his greatest, hands down. I think it is the second quintet's finest moment. There is a later Mark Wilder remix of Miles Smiles from the late 90s that I don't think is as good as Anesini's. The Anesini disc is part of that cheap-looking red border "Columbia Jazz Contemporary Masters" series. It looks like nothing, and can be found used for next to nothing, but this is the one to have, at least as far as digital is concerned. Interesting, I like Anesinis' work, I'll keep an eye out for that one. Some of those in that series are good, some are very bad. The Freedom Jazz Dance bootleg series is a good deep dive into Smiles.
