Understand that this was quite a big subject on the original board and just wanted to ask for clarification on a couple of things re: John Oteri. Don't want to waste your time on stuff that you've dealt with before but as I can't access original threads, no idea what's been covered. Wondered if anyone could shed light on a couple of things (below)
Regarding whether Hoffman is Oteri, one bit of information I read that doesn't seem to fit the notion that Oteri is a Hoffman sock puppet is on a thread about Claus' Hoffman shrine site from 2005.
John Oteri says: Very nice site but not one picture of me? :shake:
MMM : You're on there, John (unless that's not you):
www.web-house.net/musik/stevehoffman/steve55.html (Link broken / old site so can't check)
John Oteri replies: Yeah. That's me. Unfortunately. I've tried to remain as incognito as possible.
But alas, the got me. Guess my Cloak of Invisibility wasn't working that day. I liked radio so much because I had a great face for it.
The above seems to imply that there was at some point a photo with John Oteri in it, and that he was known to MMM. (edit - thinking about this, i have been presupposing MMM knows what Oteri looks like, when in fact he just be joking around, for example a cat asleep or something, pointing out some figure on the photo and imagining a likeness to Oteri).
Original thread
On the other hand, I cannot find any reference to 'Rock On' magazine, that both Hoffman and Oteri handles mention that Oteri (supposedly) wrote for. Find it hard to believe that there would be no reference on the whole of the internet to a magazine in circulation at the time, that was supposedly well- known enough to grant access to hip gig venues.
Ah...but what Steve mentions is only the tip of the iceberg! When Steve and I split up for a while (over a girl, no less) we went our separate ways...after Rock On I wrote freelance articles for a music mag that will remain nameless, under another name that will also remain nameless...but one of the staffers was Rodney Binginheimer. Because I could actually form a complete sentence, Rod The Mod Jr. befriended me and we actually worked together for an entire summer, until I just got too freaked out by his behavior. He couldn't drive then, and by this time I had my license, so I drove him all over. I met everybody and went to some uh...interesting parties. His best friend was Kim Fowley. So the three of us hang around for an entire summer together...and I could tell you stories. But some of which I'm sworn to secrecy
Seems highly unlikely that this magazine existed, which would imply that it is a made up name to fit a fictional scenario.
