Every woman has that time of the month where she makes baseless accusations against James Woods. Is just a biological fact.

James Woods? The great guy who hit on Amber Tamblyn while she was only 16?

I really, really wish that there would be a female starring as James Bond just to trigger the uptight Shites. There was a rumor about it a few months ago on the board and I think the thread was deleted because not only was the potential lead a female, she was also black. Who gives a shit who plays Bond? Is it really going to destroy their favorite memories of Sean Connery? Didn't they already have a female lead in Timothy Dalton? Christ.

There was a spoiler to this extent for the new film something about a black woman being assigned the codename 007 and everyone lost their shit. I'm a fan of the James Bond series and do not give a single shit who plays Bond. Anyone would be better than Roger fucking Moore. If any of his films are good (and there's probably two at most), it's in spite of him, not because of him.

He was good in The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, and had his moments in Live and Let Die. The rest is much too campy. HIs last two films in particular, the one he made because the producers didn't want to put a newcomer against Sean Connery and the one where the plastic surgery prevented him from having any expressivity in the eyes and the forehead, are a collection of bad one-liners provided by Moore.
The Bond franchise currently attracts a lot of flack from MRAs and other right-wing people, but, curiously, it's much less toxic than Star Wars. There was some opposition when Daniel Craig was cast (in case people hadn't seen Layer Cake, most of them forgot all of it just two minutes into Casino Royale), and most of the ire of these crowds is now targeted at Barbara Broccoli, because they don't want a woman at the head of this franchise and blame her for every bit of evolution of the character compared to the Neanderthal days of Sean Connery.
Instead, complaints on the Bond boards are mostly about excessive serialization that takes away some of the fun, the increased screen time for Tanner, or Moneypenny (yet, they really like Naomie Harris in the part), the scores by Thomas Newman or the foster brother thing for Blofeld. Given that Bond in the movies is practically a fantasy for any middle-aged conservative male in the UK, the fanbase is surprisingly progressive.

I’ve not really delved into the fandom - I watch the entire series when a new film gets released, and occasionally pick one up when I’m bored, but am glad to read your appraisal of how the series is viewed by the hardcore fans.
My opinion is that no single Bond film has a full house of a good Bond, a good plot, a good leading lady, a good villain, a good theme song and good direction. The best Bond films have four of those; Casino Royale is my favourite (the theme song is the only let down) and Octopussy is the polar opposite in that it has none.

I remember reading that the release of Austin Powers had a marked effect on the series' writing and production. The camp, fun James Bond of Roger Moore probably isn't making a return for fear of comparisons being drawn.
Also, many film series started taking themselves very seriously. Even superhero movies feel the need to inject dark themes and "brooding" qualities, mostly with unconvincing results.
P.S. Dr No is the best James Bond. Fight me.

It's a straight line downhill from there.

I'd pick From Russia with Love as the best one, with On Her Majesty's Secret Service (sue me), The Spy Who Loved Me and Casino Royale just a step below, and then Dr. No, Goldfinger and Skyfall another notch below.
Whatever affection I have for the old ones, the new ones starring Craig (even if Quantum of Solace and Spectre are deeply boring) make them look ancient now. If you want to talk about disappointing entries, just look at Brosnan after Goldeneye. He got formulaic scripts and he was barely coasting in them because of that.
