What an Audiophool listening party would be like if an audiophool could get anyone to join them:

Mike is a self-professed audiophile and I always appreciated that he was aware enough to see the absurdities. The best part of this clip is how he nails the Mikey Fremer serious listening thing long before that guy was the Internet's favorite "expert" on all things vinyl.

The SHites watch that and cannot understand why it's funny.

Mike is a self-professed audiophile... Right, and I wouldn't be surprised if he is not the only Best Brains member who has an interest in Hi-Fi and definitely not the only Music enthusiast. Love their parody of "The Dead" in EP 603 "The Dead Talk Back".

IIRC, they continued that solo into the end credits too. TV's Frank was the jazz fan on staff and he'd work stuff in from time to time. There's a Bill Evans riff that was one of those "did I just hear that?" things the first time I heard it.

You remember correctly, Crow's Jerry solo was in the closing credits. I was a little disappointed because on the clip I provided, Mike had to retrieve Crow to come into the theater, but that was trimmed. And there were a number of Jazz references on the show, like Dr. Forrester's tribute to Coltrane, "An Evil Supreme" on a Season 2 ep. A very Pop Culture savvy show and that includes music.

One of my favorite MST3K one-liners is Tom Servo yelling "there's a Mingus among us!" when some generic jazz bass starts up in a shitty "beatnik" movie.

Are you referring to the revived Netflix MST3K? I have to cop that I must be the only person in America without a Netflix sub so I have yet to check it out. I do watch Rifftrax and I did do most of the Cinematic Titanic when that was around.

I've bought a few of the Rifftrax shorts over the years, and think it's pretty decent. (With Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett, it's pretty much the Sci-Fi Channel's version of MST3K, just with a new name.)
Definitely not as into it as before though.

Yes. It is ... OK. But you just cannot catch lightning in a bottle twice. It had its time, and that time was a long time ago. What I like about Movie Sign with the Mads is that it is just three intelligent people discussing film, and going off on interesting tangents. They are not in character or riffing. (Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu are not involved in the MST3K revival, which shows their integrity, I think.) "... catch lightning in a bottle twice." Yeah, that was my concern. I only had access to the show in 1994, after Joel's tenure. I did see it previously in 1991 when I was channel surfing on, of all places, the Lifetime Channel when they were showing nominees for Cable Ace Awards. It was "Cave Dwellers", the scene where Miles O'Keefe is hang gliding. Instant love, and when Paragon Cable offered a box and package to pickup Comedy Central, I leapt at it. Followed the show to SciFi and mourned both times it was cancelled. But, we're talking a nearly two decade gap and while I love the 'bots and the Mads, that was of a time and place that's passed. As far as the podcast, love the name, nice call back. And I have no doubt it would be very engaging and entertaining. I'll have to find time before the week is through to check it out.

"Definitely not as into it as before though." I can understand. There have been some pretty massive changes in media and entertainment options since the show ended it's run on SciFi. And I can see the "shorts" approach as easily digestible and efficient. Rifftrax does have some epic shorts, "Shake Hands with Danger", the drugs one with Anita Bryant, and the citizen one with Bob Crane. I will say that I have found several of the Rifftrax movies rewarding, but you do have to jump through hoops when it comes to the Blockbusters they do since they don't have licensing rights. But, if you have Amazon Prime, I've found there are a good number of the grade B and lower, that I prefer anyway, are available for streaming/download with your subscription. My current favorite is R.O.T.O.R., a "RoboCop" knock-off filmed in Dallas Texas. Has everything I love, an unlikeable "hero", limited and hokey secondary characters, a non-existent "special effects" budget, huge plot holes, and you'll see how a great share of the "action" is "phoned in". Please forgive the rampant quotation marks.

...Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu are not involved in the MST3K revival, which shows their integrity, I think.) They also weren't asked really. Frank made some pretty pointed comments about that in one of the Movie Sign with the Mads episodes. I know other ex-cast members have made comments that they found out about it same as anyone else (when the Kickstarter launched) and were then invited to participate if they wanted. Kind of a shitty way to do it really.
