One correction, it was MCA, not Capitol. If you read any of the books concerning MCA at this time (there are at least two), it becomes a bit easier to understand how STeVE could get a foot in the door. The biz was in a low point and MCA was the shittiest of the majors. Some of the other shenanigans going on there (mob involvement, financial mismanagement, etc.) suggest there wasn’t a whole lot of oversight going on. I’m sure anyone with a half good line of bullshit could have gotten where STeVE did. As an aside, I’ve often thought the only reason Sticky Fingers STeVE didn’t get in any real trouble was because about the time he was found out, MCA was busy fighting allegations of being a mob front. I’m sure bringing attention about masters, contract documents and whatever else walking out the door was decided to be a bad idea at this time. Thank you for correcting me, appreciate it. What you had written I find interesting. Explains a lot! They LITERALLY were scraping the bottle of the barrel when they took in hoof. What you propose regarding Sticky fingers only receiving a slap on the hand makes sense. Btw, I did know it was MCA and f*ked up. He’s spun a lot bullshit and pulled so many monkeyshines, sometimes I have trouble keeping the details straight...

I am not doubting anything at all but how did it come out that Steve stole all of those tapes? I have read the write-up chapters that someone sent me but I don’t recall if it said how he was caught or not. Was it the Buddy Holly overdubs that did it? Did someone else say they remember seeing an ad from him in old Goldmine Magazines selling stuff in the back?

I imagine that's already been the case for some time now. Probably discusses important things between himself and his sockpuppet personas. Speaking of the puppets, his “old pal” Oteri is the one that gets me the most. Shows how fucking deranged STeVe is.

I'm not saying that unnamed someone was Steve Hoffman. I really don't know. He could be named Joe Schmoe or John Doe or Chaim Goldberg. Who the fuck knows.
That's right. Or John Oteri.

It disappeared faster than a Buddy Holly master tape.

And given STeVE’s various stories about Beatles master tapes, mixing the Hollywood Bowl tapes, etc. it’s pretty easy to say Capitol instead of MCA.

Well when you've told stories about lunch with the Beatles producer, chats with band members as well as having one of the band members at your residence, yeah, I could see how it could get mixed up.

Now don't forget the recent revelation in light of the Universal fire that an unnamed *someone* was once caught at MCA stealing master tapes and documents — and the reason that certain unnamed someone was not prosecuted was because, among other things, he had sold to collectors old contracts — of which MCA had no other copies. Meaning that MCA no longer had any actual proof of any claim on or ownership of these old artists and their masters.
About 15 years ago, I had an automated search set up on eBay for Billie Holiday records. One day, an auction appeared in my inbox comprising a couple of 1950s LPs, a few photographs, and her Decca contract. I assumed it was a photocopy, but you've got me wondering now how it leaked in the first place.

Yes. Read too many of his Tall Tales and it puts you into a Vicodin induced haze. The next ya know your head is bobbling around just like the infamous “ Hoofy Gone Wild Video ”...

The thing is, I never really saw any of those stories until I signed up here. There's another one of those "I saw it all, I was THERE!" poaters that I've mentioned prior, but rarely, if ever, saw STeVE poat this stuff. Then I came here and saw them all lined up, one by one, and it all made sense...

The Universal archivist who told this story also mentioned at the same time that the Universal warehouse that went up in flames had an entire corner labeled "Hoffman." That is, the boxes of MCA property that the FBI had retrieved from Hoffman's residence. It sat there like that for years, as nobody could be bothered (or paid) to re-integrate the stuff into its proper place. Maybe they just thought: Fuck it! Leave it in the corner STeVe is gonna break in here too... ( being sticky fingers and all.)

He was touting himself as some sort of “legendary M.E.” I thought this is interesting and decided to check his page. However, right from the GETGO I noticed something was off kilter there. The more I kept reading all I could think was this Hoffman guy is like no M.E. I ever seen. He has no room, no gear, doesn’t do bread & butter jobs, has no technical section to talk shop, NOTHING... just a “fan club”. His “JBL mix cloning techniques “ and “5k Beatle boost bullshit “wore thin with me VERY quickly. Also, I found some of his “Habits” to be rather downright shitty. Generally as a rule, Audio Engineers don’t openly diss their peers. Therefore, I decided to ask him some questions and was promptly BANNED on more than one occasion. Frankly, it pissed me off. That’s because Initially, I wasn’t rude to him. All I tried to do was ask him some questions which ANY professional M.E. would have no problem answering.. expect for sTeVe. “ Revered in the biz” uh, yeah. He’s just blowing smoke up the SHites asses. In fact, you will NEVER hear his name mentioned in A.E. circles. He’s a total NOBODY and a FRAUD on top of it. That corny ass story telling he spoon feeds to SHites is such a Joke. Hoof saves the day with “Breath of Life”... what a fucking clown!

I wasn't there to worship at the altar. I didn't even know who he was when I signed up. I saw "music forums" and started reading, and then posting. Besides, I wasn't going to be spending $50 on a CD or $12,000 on a turntable.
