I've fucked around with a lot of "vintage" speakers, turntables and various types of tape equipment in my life, mainly to flip, but I am at least barely smart enough not to go down that "tubey goodness" rabbit hole with its insanely expensive NOS tubes, hard-to-diagnose crackles and hummmmms, and fiddly, hot, maybe unsafe old amplifiers. Also I haven't used a tuner here in many years except to test before selling on eBay.

I got all excited when I found an old tube receiver in a barn where we had our horse once. Brought it home and plugged it in and hooked an old turntable to it. Used it for about a month till it let out this horrendous crackling sound that scared the shit out of the wife who was a floor below. It died and that was my journey into tubey goodness.

I've never thought tubes were a good idea since they took the tube testers out of the drugstore. Now if you get a weird noise your only option is to take it in to get the tubes tested. That's gonna be at least 80 bucks and a week or two without a stereo and that's if all goes well and it's just a bad tube. I know some people that have listened to the vintage or die crowd and tried getting into vinyl and they've spent so much on turntables because they don't last that they could have bought a cheap Rega or ProJect and been better off. They tried telling me the vintage one sounds better because it "would cost 2K in today's dollars" but they've struggled with speed issues and weird sounds that I never have with my much newer Rega. I have put together a couple of decent systems from garage and estate sales for very little money, and some of them are still keeping people very happy but they took months to find and pieces moved in and out until they turned out to be what was dependable and solid. Why bother unless you have lots of time?
My friend just got a pretty big Sony Bluetooth speaker for christmas. It's not really portable if you're travelling but if you're just going to the park or out to the pool or something it's plenty portable. I couldn't believe how great it sounds. She heard my JBL which isn't as big and told her kids she liked it and they got the Sony for her and I'm impressed. It's the closest thing to a "stereo" this family has ever had and they think it sounds unbelievable. They aren't wrong. It sounds really good. It's not like my stereo, but I can't take my stereo to the park and it totally fits her needs perfectly. If I were a teenager and I had her Bluetooth speaker, I'd think I had some killer tunes for sure. For most people Spotify and a speaker like that is all they need. I don't think you can even get snotty about it because the thing sounds genuinely good. I think that's great. I think they'll all listen to more music than they do now, and I think that's definitely a good thing.

It’s so funny, especially now reading this political crap, to read the SHiTes preach how music is to bring people together. Then when they find out someone’s system they mock and poke fun of them. If someone is happy with what they have then who the hell cares? I wish I could find the post from a couple of years back when someone asked about a basic cheap record player and they SHiTes went off on the poor guy. Someone spoke up and basically said if they are happy why should anyone care? Someone responded, “because they may sell those records to a used store and I could end up buying damaged records because of their cheap player.”

All this shit is Greek to me, but I was given a bunch of old stereo equipment. I'm using a Kenwood tuner from 1979 or 80 I think. All I know is it sounds good and that's good enough for me.
All that stuff down there will probably never be used. Tubey goodness my ass.

In the bathroom I run a new 4th Gen Echo Dot through a JBL Xtreme 2 Portable Bluetooth Speaker and it sounds sort of great -- even better considering the JBL was a dirt cheap refurb and the Dot was half price. If it was all I had in my life to listen to I could be pretty happy with it.

It was at least 15 years between hearing the cover version on the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack to hearing the original. Neither warrants a listen again.

The topic has devolved into one of my fav SHiTE threads, where peopsons poat, "No one I know has covered this song except for this super famous cover version." All SHiTEs ever want to do is list every band, album and song from 1963 to 1984.

Name a Thing You Remember is what the threads inevitably turn into. I started one with that title a long while back, and they took the bait with gusto.
