And that's exactly why I shop for it. Why would I buy a download for $15 when I can get the CD for $4? If I believed enough of that download went into the artist's pocket to make a difference, I would (and I always try to buy vinyl or CDs direct at live shows). But I know how the game works.
If the artist gets a dime from the fifteen dollar download, he's getting more than from a used four dollar CD. I don't think he really know how it works.
