Killing time wait for my wife this morning while she was getting nails done I went to a used music store just to kill time. There was a guy in there with extreme funk smell - that sweaty, gross, unwashed crotch smell. He was yelling at the clerks in there that certain items were priced too low or too high depending on what release they were. “This is an original CD release from 1986 and you have it marked at $4 but you should sell at least $15.” That kind of shit. I thought immediately that is the Cleveland definition of MYKE right there. I think the last time I was at the Fairview record show that dude kept looking at the records right next to me no matter which table I went to. I thought when I got home I’d smell like that. Exactly, I was afraid the smell would stick to me. The guy looked like the comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. Maybe a combo DeVoe and MYKE?

I started buying CDs primarily online in 2015 and made my last in-store CD purchase in May of 2016. Whether it was going through bins of used CDs in various spots in the village, browsing J&R or Virgin to decide what I wanted to get that day, or just hitting up the nearest and cheapest spot for a new release (usually Best Buy), it was fun and free of smelly guys, but thrill has long gone. It started to feel more like a chore. I cherish the memories but see no point in trying to recreate them. And scouring the used bins has to be even more pointless now that 99 percent of all the good shit is probably being listed on eBay or discogs instead.
The whole point of RSD is basically to replicate the whole record store experience but in the most contrived and commercial way. I never participated in that nonsense. Even at 17, I thought it sounded pretty stupid, and I was still in my prime years of going to record stores. I also discovered torrents at that time. Downloading as a whole was so different back then. Albums would be split between 4 rapidshare links and it would take 2 days to get the whole thing. I had to download stuff secretly because we weren't allowed to download on the family computer. And then after high school I got my laptop. And god forbid I disconnected from the internet for half a second. Download failed! (If you want to experience the worst of the old days of downloading, try using free rapidgator. 3 hours+ downloads.)
They say smell can help recall memories so vivid. Thankfully, you guys had to smell the gross record shoppers, not me!

Thankfully, you guys had to smell the gross record shoppers, not me! I went to a record show exactly once - never again. Besides the funk smell of the people there and the overpriced items what was most appalling to me were the attitudes of the people there. They were acting like entitled little brats, pushing out of the way if you were browsing and didn’t know what you wanted, and arguing among themselves. I was flipping through a selection of country music (Cash, Haggard, etc) just looking to see what classic artists were in there and some slob comes up and says since I am not looking in the rock music I needed to step aside. I told him I would in a moment when I was done and the dealer came over and said I needed to move since this was one of his big spending customers. I said “Fuck you” and walked away. Never again to one of those things.

Thank god this was just a day visit to see some friends, I couldn’t live in the same area code as ol’ Renny!

Forgive me father for I have sinned. It has been 20 years since I went to a record show.

He took shelter in the digital downstairs. The analog upstairs is a total loss.

God Ole Groovin' Garrett must be thrilled that MYKEY is name dropping him while continuing to suck Chris "Batman" Bellman's knob every chance he gets.
