To quote one of the posters below, “This is comedy gold.” Gnrat corrects and schools everyone in social studies. I am sorry for the long post but this just had me laughing. I also included the link below so you can go look at the original post to see all comments and more.

Where should we go to the beach in Africa?
head_unit:
I have a big chunk of frequent flyer miles which can get us there :nauga:
But a safari and all that would be too expensive at this time (well maybe next summer more likely). Ideally someplace not ridiculously remote, but also ideally not wildly expensive due not just to money but I'm not really fond of super deluxe resorts at all, I like more local low-key kind of options (however, looking to avoid disease ridden fleabag outposts ha ha).
I've thought about Comoros,, Seychelles, Senegal (ever since watching The Endless Summer), Madagascar (my mom has made me paranoid about rampant disease...is that an overblown concern?). South Africa seems cool but I'd rather go when I can spend on a safari.
Could be northern Africa as well, but no war zones please! The main point is lovely sandy beach with WARM water, though with some kind of other stuff to look at. We snorkel but do not dive, we do hike etc.

Africa is a continent, the largest on earth. It's better to ask which country.
Wright:
No, Asia is the largest continent.
Gnrat:
I suppose it depends on which map you use. None are accurate. The problem is that there is no accurate world map, but all scientists agree that the most common Mercator map that we all grew up with is woefully inaccurate, making all northern hemisphere continents much larger than they really are.
From all I have researched, though this is the most accurate size of the African continent. Is Asia larger? Depends on what you include as Asia. To be correct, I wrongly stated that Africa is the largest continent. No, the largest is Antartica.

petercl:
The Mercator is very accurate, for directions and shapes, not accurate for land size. If you want the best representation of sizes a globe is your best bet.
Asia is definitely the largest continent.

Wright:
What do maps have to do with this? They're a representation of land mass, nor the measurement of it. The sizes of the continents remain the same, regardless of projection. And no, Antarctica is not the largest continent - Asia is.
Gnrat:
Mercator is a highly inaccurate map, and is viewed with a Eurocentric perspective. But, I am going to steer clear of certain implications of the Mercator map, which you can easily Goole up yourself. The Mercator projection was only developed for navigation, not as any type of accurate size of land mass.

And last, but not least, here's a fun interactive map to check how big the U.S. really is compared to other places.

Now, back to beaches on the African continent...

What research did you do? You won't find any research anywhere (either internet or paper-based) that argues that Asia is not the largest continent on earth!
Gnrat:
My own research. And, Antartica is the largest continent. Only thing is that few people live there. Brrrrrrr!
Wright:
No.
gary191265:
I'll have whatever you're taking...
petercl:
Did you even read what I wrote?
Gnrat:
Yes. It's just that most don't consider it a continent.
Gnrat:
I did. I was confirming what you wrote about it being for navigation only.
Wright:
Asia: 17,212,000 square miles
Antarctica: 5,400,000 square miles
Antarctica: 5,400,000 square miles
Gnrat:
OK, But, again, some people measure Asia differently. Some include Europe. Some include the Middle East, some include all of the Russian Federation. Some don't include any of that. So, it gets wonky.
However, the African continent is not tiny as shown in the Mercator map. It is not the same size as the U.S..

gary191265:
Ey? Who doesn't consider Antarctica to be a continent?
gary191265:
Man, this is comedy gold!
Wright:
No, people don't measure Asia differently. There is no ambiguity or lack of consensus about what constitutes Asia.
