Who knew that jazz would be the downfall of Stereo Central?
See, It's all them uppity darkies' fault.

That's fantastic. Aren't Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette laughing at some private joke throughout most of that show, or am I thinking of something else? Have you heard the anecdote about Gary Bartz almost beating the shit out of Jarrett? Miles could be such a wonderful shit-stirrer when he wanted to.
Also, I think it was mainly Dave Holland grinning like a loon throughout the Isle of Wight set, but it seems to be after he's looked over at wonky Keith and his manbag.
Dave Holland looks higher than a fucking kite at the Isle Of Wight gig. Mind you, they were probably all higher than kites...

I wonder if they hung out with Hawkwind. Part of me would like to think so.

I wonder if they hung out with Hawkwind. Part of me would like to think so. Hawkwind's mate Mick Farren's book Give The Anarchist A Cigarette gives a lot of (occasionally unnecessary) detail about how he 'liberated' the Isle Of Wight festival, but makes no mention of any encounters with Miles and co. I would've thought any meeting would've merited a solid chapter in the book, given how much he namechecks other stars of the time.

The Out to Lunch CD I have is a Japanese disc from 1994. (No, I didn't buy it because of the obi; I bought it used and the stupid obi wasn't even included, so there.) It is this one: www.discogs.com/Eric-Dolphy-Out-To-Lunch/release/6370480There is no mastering credit on this that I can see. I have no idea if this is a clone of a widely available version or not. Whatever the case, it does does sound very impressive. Very wide stereo, if that is your concern. Sounds like the first CD mastering. RVG's own remastering narrowed the stereo image, and IIRC brightened the EQ (this from memory, I haven't listened to the RVG remaster in years)

Scientology was to fusion doofuses of the 70s what heroin was to hard boppers of the 50s, apparently. Don't get me wrong, there certainly are some visceral pleasures to be found in Coltrane — Ascension and Sun Ship kinda get there, but, yeah, the lack of humor is a huge part of the problem. Coltrane really did seem to be buying into his messiah delusions. This dour solemnity, I think, is why he was never going to be capable of *really* cutting loose and truly be punk as all fuck, like Frank Wright achieved with Unity or the skullfuckery that Brötzmann and Masayuki Takayanagi were flinging out by the early 70s; nor was he ever going to possess the vision and composition skills to be Anthony Braxton or Cecil Taylor. Like Charlie Parker, Coltrane had already reached his impasse shortly before he died. I like me some Expression, but then again, humor is not something I go to late-period Coltrane for. Though it makes me laugh to think how fast it would clear a room at a party.

Nope, not STEVE and RVG. This is STEVE and Stan Ricker, but I didn't want to start a new thread. Anyway, lots of love from STEVE for this erstwhile distinguished gentleman. Stan Ricker used to cut vinyls at MFSL in the 70s and 80s. STEVE is a class act. He would never slam a legendary colleague.

With comments like that why wouldn’t industry insiders be rushing to sign up for fun and games in Hoofyville?
