In his thread forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/a-point-when-the-stones-stopped-writing-for-the-masses-and-began-writing-for-the-intelligentsia.777475/
xilef regnu poats:
"Was there a moment when the originally middle-class Stones took a deep breath, looked around themselves and, with a slightly jaundiced smile and a check of the old bank balance, decided they were a part of the intelligentsia?
If you think so, can you pinpoint that moment or, if you think my premise is entirely faulty, can you please elucidate as to why?
For me the transition occurred when they began writing songs that, while retaining an appeal for the masses, had an extra bit of resonance for the cognoscenti, i.e. Warhol types, the Studio 54 entourage, Margaret Trudeau and ilk, jet setters, scions, politicos, royalty, other stars, etc.
Obviously the idea of a calculated transition as opposed to a complete shift in focus contradicts my thread title slightly, but I find it hard to fit that thought in the limited space allowed for titles.
I'd say their approach entirely metamorphosized about the time of the material written for Beggar's Banquet i.e. "Jigsaw Puzzle", "Sympathy for the Devil", "Street Fighting Man" et al., but "Between the Buttons" certainly has its moments and "Their Satanic Majesties Request" probably wasn't written for stevedores and shopgirls to partake of on their lunch breaks. One could even postulate as early as "Play With Fire" and "Lady Jane"?"
He's too deep for the pleebs at Hoofyland.

kinkling, who can't be too SHiTey, because he has a Mark E Smith avatard adds:
"as did cognoscenti, scions, metamorphosized, postulate, and stevedores, none of which I had to look up, but all of which made my eyebrows raise"
So xilef dumbs it down, which may seem damn near impossible given that first poat, but xilef has some mad skills:
"Here, I propose a rewrite for the masses:
Those Stones used to make some great dance music and sometimes you could even make out or start a fight to their stuff, but then they got all high-fallutin. You could still beat up people, but you might ending up doing more than just rearrange their faces. Now their stuff just makes my head hurt."
I know that run of the mill stupid SHiTery has lost some of his charm now that Hoofyland has been overrun by evil Trumptards, but I thought someone should think of the STeVEdores. Plus I love how the average SHiTE thinks "Lady Jane" is too clever for the masses.
