Almost married Kate Beckinsale, but I didn't have the good looks or bank account. Fuck off Steve.

What he’s not making a point of is that anyone with a million could have had the Bowie catalog. It’s not like DCC or STeVE was anything special. I could have started a label and had the Bowie catalog if I’d had the money. Typical STeVE story. I think at the old place someone linked a blog of of the Ryko guys was doing about that time. I remember he mentioned many of the old RCA disks used the cassette masters and they had the papers to prove it. Heh.

Some of the old Stones European CDs were based on digital transfers done by Mofi to be used for dubbing cassettes. London wanted to listen to them for "study" but they just copied the files.
Also, the Bowie story is definitely bullshit. It's not just about the money. Ryko may have been a small structure, but DCC was just a niche reissue label. They just didn't have distribution deals that would allow them to produce and ship the entire major back catalog for a major artist such as Bowie. How would they have marketed the releases? There wasn't even a pre-Internet board where Gnart and Dave could carry the Gospel of Steve.

"Almost got the Stones catalog for Gold CD though. That would have been neat. J. Klein was interested but said, "Steve Hooffman mastering it, You have got to be fucking crazy."

"Almost got the Stones catalog for Gold CD though. That would have been neat. J. Klein was interested but said, "Steve Hoffman mastering it, You have got to be fucking crazy." Speaking of the Klein family, there's some dude on Discogs who is obsessed with W-I-D-E-S-T-E-R-E-O mixes and the majority of his record reviews are screeds of disgust against reissuing mono remixes, and allusions to how Jews control the Rolling Stones catalogue. I'm certain he's a SHiTe in some form, as his self-written profile page is a rant about how downloading has killed DJ culture and how women are not music lovers. I'd link to it, but it's too depressing to search that shit out.

Daddy finally comes clean about the Pretenders fuck up!
STeVE:
"We wanted to do the Pretenders album, one of my favorites of all-time.
We didn't want to use the same Equalized and Compressed cutting dub that everyone else used to cut this. With a connection at Rhino (I think) we got some of the original mixes from the UK. A few didn't have the final effects or whatever on them and we were supposed to add them in post. At any rate, we did that over at Capitol and something happened, everything got sonically compromised in some way during manufacturing and that was it.
Every other version since then (so I've noted) has gone back to using the same worn out USA EQ dub again!"
Something happened. Well, that should clear everything up.

The Truth About The PRETENDERS (First Album) Master Tapes
Hello Everyone...I hope this writing finds all of you well and listening to something you love.
Like, hmm...maybe...one of our latest releases. I'm talking about one of my favorite recent projects: PRETENDERS
I'd like to take an opportunity to clear up some confusion that seems to surround this album in the audiophile world. It doesn't deserve to be cast in a shadow of supposition and misinformation.
As most of you probably already know, the master tapes for most single LPs, those that were released between the dawn of the long-playing phonograph record and the advent of the Compact Disc, exist on two reels of analog tape - one for Side One and one for Side Two. And, although the Pretenders' debut was recorded during this period, the master tapes are not so simply configured.
Here, once and for all, are the FACTS regarding these original master tapes.
"Stop Your Sobbing" was the first song recorded for the album. Recorded at Eden Studios in the UK, the master exists on a little 7-and-a-half-inch reel (recorded at 15 IPS) with no other songs from the LP on it. They continued (switching producers from Nick Lowe to Chris Thomas) at Wessex Sound Studios, also in the UK, with Bill Price engineering. Interestingly, each song recorded and mixed at Wessex exists on a separate reel, with separate calibration tones that are exclusively intended for that song. And, at some point near the end of the Wessex sessions, they went over to AIR Recording Studios, London and captured "Brass In Pocket". That's 12 songs, 12 reels of tape.
At the conclusion of all of these sessions, it was decided to create ANOTHER tape, one they would call the "Album Production Master". This was configured in the usual two-reel Side One/Side Two fashion. While making this tape, they sometimes applied equalization, compression and/or limiting...essentially mastering the album in the process...from which the original UK LP was cut. Luckily, MFSL were given direct access to the individual reels, as well...for each and every song...from which we mastered our releases.
All of the songs are in their finished, final form on these individual reels.....except ONE: "The Phone Call". It appears that at some point, it was decided that telephone sound effects would be added to the track. This was not added to the "Phone Call" reel, however, but added to the "Album Production Master". Therefore, one must use this tape for this one song in order to have the correct, final version. Since no earlier mix of the song contains these sound effects, the song as it exists on this reel is the MASTER.
As with all of our releases, nothing was spared in terms of expense or time in order to present this album to you at the highest possible level of quality, faithfulness and integrity. And, also as with all of our releases, we hope you get to hear and enjoy it.
With great respect and appreciation for your support,"
Rob LoVerde Mastering Engineer Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab
Amazing what a reputable company can clear up with a calm, assured and reasonable up-front explanation. No need for obfuscation, finger-pointing all over the fucking map and downright lies practiced by fly-by-night wanna-be players. The Pretenders Sack Dee by MFSL (all three actually) sound fucking great.
Oh, And fuck you Hooofman. Piece of shit excuse for a fucking human being.

Oh, and I love the technical jargon that STeVE uses, even if some of it is over my head, since I am not a remasturbator master. Words and phrases like "equalized," "Compressed cutting dub," and "final effects or whatever."

When you are STEVE and something that you were involved in goes wrong, it is ALWAYS the other parties that made the fatal error(s). It's never STEVE.
Even though I couldn't give two shits about this album, I remember read this blurb from our former-member R. Loverde with great interest (yes, this was after the fucked-up AF version):

You’d think someone who is supposed paid for his ears working on a “all time favorite” album would be able to be a little more specific than “final effects or whatever”.

As if The Pretenders needed to sound like Steely fucking Dan.
I bet he had never heard the album before he masterbated it.
