That's funny. I know Julie Burchill talks a load of bollocks and her John Peel piece was a hatchet job, but the way she described rock in the 70s as being male and smelly..This guy has to be an ageing, overweight version of what she was talking about. Ms. Burcholl is right. But, it's not just live music. "Male and smelly" describes pretty much every used record store I've ever set foot inside in the USA. Notting Hill Record and Video Exchange - infamous in London, used to be really smelly. I worked there for all of about 3 days in the early '90s. Some people worked there for ages, but can't think how they stuck it. The guy who ran it was a wacko called Brian whose interview technique was to quiz you on who was in the Byrds and the Buffalo Springfield. His office was piles of porno mags and other debris. He was a complete ass. Somehow he'd managed to build up this little scuzzy empire of 2nd hand stuff. They'd pay you out of the till at the end of the day. A woman I knew later, who went on to become a successful artist, told me that when she worked there, the male customers would talk to her in incredibly patronising tones like there was no way she would know anything about music. I had a friend, now deceased who was a lovely guy when he was sober, but unfortunately that was rarely. One day, when we were trying to help him through one of his borderline personality / self harming meltdowns, he stole a load of CDs from our flat to pay for booze. We knew exactly where to go to find them... Notting Hill Record and Video exchange! Sure enough there they were. They'd buy for CDs for £1 from desperate people like this guy (probably knowing full well stuff was stolen), and put 90% price hike on it. I dont' know if that place is still running but it doesn't deserve to be.

She served me in the rarities section upstairs, and I was super impressed that a real life pop star was in a record store. It's still there. Still buying CDs for pennies on the pound. I've bought a couple of really fantastic rarities in there over the past 20 years, but it is mostly absolute shit. As for Say It Right, I can't think of anything good to say about him other than he occasionally unleashes his shit on the sort of poater who very much deserves it, but that's like a WWF heel vs heel match where no one's invested in the winner because they're both dicks.

Fucker uses any opportunity possible to trash Big Star. He deserves extra hate for that. Here are a few nuggets:
Already mentioned, Big Star. Their fans here at least get validation from their buddies here. They aren't even discussed elsewhere.
Really don't remember Big Star at all. If their name came up, it didn't register. Critics apparently liked them, and they have a cheering section on the forum.
Big Star is massively overrated on this forum. Discussed here almost daily but hardly mentioned anywhere else.
I never expressed an opinion on their music. In fact, couldn't name one song by them and had never even heard of them until discussions popped up here. This comes from somebody with a reasonable knowledge. So, please don't make assumptions. Essentially, what you're suggesting is "he doesn't like them, therefore he thinks they suck." That's not my M.O., except maybe in the case of Grand Funk. :shh:
However, do think that Big Star's relative importance is exaggerated by their fans here. It could be anybody though. Anytime somebody opens up those "underrated?" threads, they run the risk of being perceived as overzealous in their support.
]It doesn't irritate me, but I am sick of having them rammed down my throat. You don't have to offer a lengthy explanation. Enjoy them in good health. Over and out.
It's not necessary to reiterate. The forum had already pressed the issue repeatedly that this a sacred cow band for a select few, as evidenced by multiple individuals feeling the need to "rebut." Ditto, if certain critics want to sing their praises, and members of Cheap Trick found inspiration, that's wonderful. Any number of other acts can fit this same profile with a little thought. Hence, the need for this thread topic. Meantime, there are always "Underrated" and "Appreciation" threads available to satisfy that lingering hunger.
Don't tell me what."I think." That post didn't even express the view as it pertains to other bands. It was about how often they're mentioned here on the forum. Yes, the fanboys push them too hard. That point has been proven. The initial post continues to rack up likes, and you're the 4th such fanboy to feel the urge to try and put me in my place since.
To anybody else who thinks they're awesome: GREAT! Just don't expect others to agree that they were super important within the grand scheme. So, what songs that were minor hits but are really now classics?
Big Star is mentioned. Had to have been written by somebody from here.
The term, itself, has grown hackneyed and thus meaningless. However, there is groupthink at this forum, which has made segments of the SHF population feel comfortable at exaggerating the relative importance of certain musical artists. We can start with the Monkees, then move though Big Star all the way to Stone Temple Pilots. So, this may not be as much of a reflection of "overrating" as (apparently) grown men displaying excessive fanboyism.
On the opposite side, had never even heard of Big Star until they were frequently pimped here. Incredulous at why they're so lionized.

He's a Robert Fripp fanboy twat. Now why does that not surprise me...Robert Fripp should be so proud of the utter assholery of some his fans. The apples don't fall far from the fuckin' tree there, obviously.
