Across The Universe gives me ear cancer.
I have a fondness for Why Don’t We Do It In The Road and Long Long Long.

I Want To Hold Your Hand - the song that broke the Beatles in America, is easily the worst of all their early songs. Clunky rhythm, clunky melody, crappy handclaps, and absolutely abysmal lyrics...
Oh yeah, I'll tell you somethin' I think you'll understand When I say that somethin' I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand I want to hold your hand
Oh please, say to me You'll let me be your man And please, say to me You'll let me hold your hand
I want to hold your hand I want to hold your hand
And when I touch you I feel happy inside It's such a feelin' that my love I can't hide I can't hide I can't hide
Yeah, you got that somethin' I think you'll understand When I say that somethin' I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand I want to hold your hand

Agreed, I've always thought that song kind of sucked. But "Love Me Do" is even worse.

Or something like that.

OK if we're doing inner Beatard I'll just bounce off a couple of earlier comments and say the two Harrison songs on Yellow Submarine are probably in my Fabs top 10. And Hey Jude is a well-crafted piece of pop art that I never want to hear again.

I think Hey Jude gets you in the feels real bad, so you lash out at it.

Not only should this sound familiar, it could still turn out to be right.

I Want To Hold Your Hand is a ridiculous piece of pop music. I can’t imagine what it sounded like coming out of the radio back then. I think it holds up well.

Take 20 of “Revolution 1” is one of the coolest things the band ever recorded.
And they never even released the damn thing...
I also like the bootlegged version of Harrison’s “It’s All Too Much” (probably because it has the “lost” verse that was part of the YS film).
The fact neither of these were McCartney tunes speaks volumes.

I think you guys are applying inapplicable standards to these early songs. The lyrics are pretty much placeholders, not some self-expression singer-songwriter bullshit. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is a terrific and unpredictable piece of music. "Love Me Do" is a nice little atmospheric thing. I have no problem with either of those. Who cares about the lyrics? The writers certainly didn't. But then I am the one who believes that the Beatles peaked with A Hard Day's Night and it's all gradually downhill from there.... I guess it is obvious by now that I really do not care for "these are my feelings/feel my pain/feel my feelings/no, really, this is of the utmost importance" narcissist shit. Fuck off, twerp, I don't care what your fucking feelings are, and why should I or anyone else? I think the greatest lyricists in all of rock were Marc Bolan, Damo Suzuki, and Mark E. Smith. Their *feelings* were their own fucking business — and they sure as hell didn't care about yours or mine either. I don’t care about the lyrics. In both cases, I think the music and arrangements are just as lame. Unlike, say, “She Loves You” which is genuinely exciting. Pop music almost always has doltish lyrics. I respond to it on an emotional level, not an intellectual level. Expressing “feelings” (sincere or not) is fine too, whatever. It’s an expressive medium. If I don’t like it, I don’t listen. As far as “Hey Jude,” it’s catchy as hell and makes me happy. What more do you need from pop? McCartney’s lyrics are always doggerel, so I don’t expect much there.

No hate for "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"? You guys disappoint me. No wonder we're just Internet friends, and not in real life. I'd forgotten it even existed. I don't think I've heard it in 20 years. This is the reason why iPods and CDs are better than records: you can program out or even delete total dreck.

I like to pretend that they really are singing, "I get high" as Dylan misheard it.

I like to pretend that they really are singing, "I get high" as Dylan misheard it. This was a missed opportunity to rectify that (but otherwise a nice cover):

The road to hell is paved with "The Long and Winding Road." In hell proper, the PA speakers blast an eternally looping playlist consisting of "Yesterday," "Rocky Raccoon" and "Wonderful Christmas Time."
