Record stores around here haven't taken returns in forever. The distros won't take them back, so you're on your own, and have to deal with the label. I've had three records that were messed up enough that I needed to return them. One was the Eggs Over Easy boxed set, and that label made me ship my entire box back to them for one record which clicked constantly, like twice per spin. It was totally annoying. They sent a new box out right after they got it though. Another was a Moondoggies album, and that one had one of the two records with a huge gouge in it that wouldn't even play through. I had to take a picture for them, and I told them I just needed that one record. That's what they sent, but man was it poorly packaged! It looks perfect and plays fine, so I'm happy. The third was that Deep Purple three record set Rhino put out. Getting hold of Dr. Rhino took some time, but once I did they got me a new record, shipped and packed like a pro to me in a couple days. If you're reasonable, and tell them that they set the policy that the distro can't send returns, and that the stores have no options, it's really not that big a deal. In fact, it seems easier than actually going back to the store, especially if it was a specially ordered record, like the first two were for me.

I think the quality of records in general is better these days. It's a bullshit policy of no returns, but like I said, I haven't had much trouble when it's necessary. There's still places that will eat the returns if you're that worried and you can buy from them (it's probably cheaper anyway), but I try to shop at record stores because I like to do it. Records are fun. Spotify is pretty great too, but it's just another way to hear music. One day I may end up getting rid of all the records and taking up less space but right now I have the room and I still think they're fun.

Ever talk to a store about Record Store Day? Those terms are even worse. Again, my friends insist it’s worth it but all the 5 year old titles in the RSD bin that they can’t move even though they keep halfing the price make me wonder.

Most of the RSD overstock is pure junk that wasn't necessary anyway, but I did find a record I really like in there because it was so cheap. Neil Gust's No.2 No Memory album. I think it was eight or nine bucks as they sold literally zero of them and three months had gone by. I figured I'd take a chance because Neil was in Heatmiser with Elliott Smith, who I had never heard, but AllMusic seemed to like them. Anyway, it's a pretty great record.

I agree that the no return policy sucks but what sucks worse is when someone takes advantage of it to the point that a shore needs to change policy. Maybe I am not that smart or don’t think in ways to screw people, but if I ordered a product from Amazon I would not think twice to work with them instead of ripping another dealer off to get it right.
That said these people who did that probably have been banned from returning to amazon (or like sites) because of abuse of their policies.

A few of those SHite Heads over there I believe have been banned from Amazon for too many returns. I'm no fan boy of Amazon but I don't blame them for not selling anything to these OCD jerks anymore. If it has a little dent on the corner it won't look good on the shelf. There was a thread discussing that over there, one guy was bragging he was returning 20 - 25% of the items he bought from Amazon. Of course they terminated his account.

Yes, they are rightfully banned, some of them anyway. The problem is that widespread abuse of the policy leads vendors to quite understandably make their return policies more stringent and difficult. This sort of abuse forced Costco to change their return policy for electronics. I remember the SHites used to constantly pat themselves on the back over how clever they imagined themselves to be by abusing Costco's policy, and encouraging their fellow dweebs to do likewise. It goes without saying that these are the same hypocritical, more moral than thou assholes atop their high horses who never hesitate to wag their bony fingers over "supporting the artists" and swearing to high heaven that they would never copy a CD because "it's against the law." Fuck them all.
I don’t know if I ever shared this story here or not - I think I did - but several years ago I received a coupon to buy a Sara Evans ceedee for $7.98 at Best Buy. My wife likes her so what the heck. I went to buy the new release and the clerk rang it up for $4, not $4 off (which would have made it $7.98). I told the girl that $4 was incorrect for the final price but she argued that it should be $4. I ended up paying $4 and tax. I mentioned it later on a “recent purchase” thread and all the moralists accused me of being the reason why Best Buy can’t sustain business, getting rid of physical media, etc. When I mentioned they would have done the same thing that set them off even more. Right on when you say fuck ‘em all. I have more fun trolling there now than I ever did before when I was serious about that place.
