Expensive audio equipment...minty Baldwins...SAG-registered children...etc. etc. etc. STeVE has more material wealth than you ever will, bucko. He also hangs out with more famous people than the schlubs you call friends. And what's the purpose of having so much stuff? Why, to brag about it, of course! I don't really want or need so many but it seems I have a bunch. I never actually went through the house and counted them before. I was actually surprised I had so many.. My VPI Classic Two and a pair of Audio Note turntables (one with a MM and one with a MC) are in my listening room, courtesy of VPI and Audio Note UK, a Music Hall MMF 7 (for 7" 45's) that Jeff Dorgay gave me (with a Shure V15 in it), and Technics 1200 with KAB mod for playing 78's are in my little studio. Two old Thorens (TD-124 and TD-160) are hooked up in my vintage system and my restored Vinyl Nirvana Thorens with Ortofon Black is in the living room. I have one of those little RCA-Victor "45 RPM Only" Bakelite machines from 1949 in the dining room. My small acoustic machine collection, all hand-crankers: A pair of hundred year old Victrolas and a 1925 Brunswick Panatrope plus a 1926 Victor Orthophonic in the hall. If course if one counts my two 1903 Edison machines, that's 15.. Never realized I had so many darn machines. At least they all work well. What about you? I know some of you have more than one machine, perhaps you don't want to play your beat up old 45's on a $2,000.00 cartridge or you just like turntables? Let us know. I never realized why I thought STeVE was so repulsive. I have a pretty good idea now.

The inside of his house is probably indistinguishable from other SHite houses, (piles and piles of useless, busted and redundant technology, empty pill bottles, dog shit on the floor, the smell of tears and body odour, etc), except this house has kids running into it, rather than out of it.

Steve even has more things than David Cassidy, Malcolm Young, George Harrison, Tom Petty and many other heroes of Shiteville. David Bowie doesn't own any rolex watches and neither does Prince. Amazing. I wonder if he's pondered that thought. Probably not.

Is Hoffman really so goddamned insecure/neurotic that he has to brag about owning stuff he probably doesn't really own? Is a lot of that expensive shit John Oteri's handmedowns or what?

The following is an oldie, but a goodie. In 2012, STeVE started a thread for the sole purpose of bragging about his "minty" Baldwin piano, and how he got such a fantastic deal on it. Since that thread's OP has been the inspiration for many of us at the old Stereo Central, I felt it should be archived here as well. Here it is: I had an old upright growing up and my wife had one as well (it's now in our boys' room). When I moved into my old house in the '90's I wanted a Grand Piano. In 1997 my audiophile buddy Brian who lived in the hills of Glendale (near Brand Park) found a piano teacher who was moving up North. She had a minty 1972 Baldwin 6' 3" L series Artist studio grand piano, Walnut wood, French Provincial style (model 226). A big piano but meant for a little old lady piano teacher (the hand carved legs, etc.) Nothing I would have picked, style wise for myself but the price was good and a girl I knew at the time (now my wife) had a boyfriend that worked at Keyboard Concepts in Van Nuys and approved the purchase as a good value. The touch of the keyboard was nice and firm, reminding me of a middle sized Steinway (like I used to fiddle with in the recording studios).. So, it's in our living room and my kids and I like to play on it. I keep it in tune, it has a nice tone, even with the top down and with the lid raised, it's louder than heck, a really nice Walnut carved box. To my surprise last week, a world famous Steinway piano restoration expert who lives near me told me that my model L Baldwin, with the 226 style carved legs, size, etc. is currently worth $75,000.00. I paid 5k for it and that was painful enough. I was astounded, to say the least. Apparently it's a rare model, especially in the 6 foot 3 inch size. It made me suddenly get all protective of it, heh. Lemon Oiled it today. What about you? Do you own an acoustic piano? What kind? Upright or Grand? Brand? Do you like it? Nice tone? I don't know too many people outside of my circle who even own a piano anymore. I can see why. Have you seen the current prices? Yikes. No normal person could afford a real piano. When I was kid you could get an old upright "honky tonk" piano at a department store for a few hundred bucks. No longer, I guess. Even the current Baldwin grands are 50k and made in mainland China. I don't much care for the trebly tone of Yamaha acoustic pianos. Everything sounds like Elton John on them. If you have an acoustic piano, keep it tuned up, at least twice a year. Keep it away from open windows, moisture, sudden changes in temp, etc. It's mainly wood, sort of a living, breathing machine. If you are not comfortable in the environment, it's no good for your piano either (or your guitar). What do you have? My Baldwin sort of looks like the one below, except it's much longer.. Note the wacky carvings on the legs, etc. Not my style but the price was right.. That was fun. Perhaps you now feel like you know STeVE a bit more. I know I do.

STeVE has to realize he is only on a 15 or so year rental of his valued possessions if he is lucky. Then poof he will spend eternity fertilizing the daisies.

STeVE has to realize he is only on a 15 or so year rental of his valued possessions if he is lucky. Then poof he will spend eternity fertilizing the daisies. Ownership and mortality - seem to be two prominent and not mutually exclusive themes at SHite land. Ownership, whether it be wanting to horde 'physical product', collect box sets, or brag about stuff (to the point of obnoxious gloating - Hoffman), audio gear, and the death of the heroes who were once upon a time, emblems of vitality. As along as these are compartmentalised into different 'things' like RIP threads and Minty Baldwin ego trips, they can hope to avoid conscious realisation that having big houses, owning lots of gear, associated feelings of gratification can't halt the nagging sense of their own decay, or halt the inevitable. I know that's not witty or humorous, but it's sort of the drift I'm getting.

Lol, this reminds me of how I last got banned over there.
- STevE posts something about how he gets free speakers. - I post something like "must be nice to get free stuff". - STeVE posts "blahblah, but, industry insider, uh, hurr, I'm entitled, durr". - I post "some of us actually take pride in paying our own way through life".
So banned. Verboten. Good times.

No Steve, Don't have any Bakelite fucking hand-crankers from 1902 or Victrolas knob-crankers for 1922. The last people who heard music from these fucking contraptions died before the second World War, before you that is.

Silly me! All this time I had thought STeVE was said to be "a master of the biz"... He's still respected in the biz. I would just like to add that it is with great pleasure that I see the Glorious Nation of France represented here at SC Mk. II by C.I.B. Nice to see you again, sir.

It's easy to live in a glorious nation. You just don't have to elect an incompetent piece of shit as a president.
