Sound United owns nearly everything Best Buy sells now, except for Yamaha. The stores with Magnolias probably have some Harmon brands as well. The whole Best Buy end of the spectrum is pretty much just two companies.

Does Best Buy actually sell anything other than home theater in a box type setups anymore? For all the bitching SHites do about "Busted Buy" (yuk yuk yuk) why would they care about this at all?

Yamaha and Sony are their own entities, so they at least are making their own designs. Yamaha's Top Art amplifier design is pretty solid. I'm pretty sure my Yamaha receiver is like 23 years old now, and it's still working perfectly and they still seem to be using that Top Art design on their current line up. They're pretty reasonably priced and they last a long time. I've been thinking I want a new one, but the old one just keeps working.

I actually Googled Sherwood just to see what exactly is sold under that name these days... I actually Googled Pyle Electronics too. I've wondered what the deal is with all those super-cheap Pyle electronics, like receivers & amps in the $75-100 price range. I'm assuming they must be crap quality. The reviews are mixed.

It looks like the Pyle stuff works, so long as you get a good one. There's plenty of people that say it works and it sounds good. There's just as many that say it works and it sounds good, until it doesn't work at all. If I wanted something in my garage like that and I didn't have an old receiver or something lying around, I'd buy one of those. If it craps out you're only out 100 bucks. Those kinds of things seem to last forever in garages anyway.
I've heard a lot of people that swear by those Crown amps that Guitar Center sells for PA's and stuff. I guess they sound pretty good and you can't really go wrong with 250 wpc amps.

I actually Googled Sherwood just to see what exactly is sold under that name these days. It isn't much: a handful of AVRs and a few 2 channel receivers. I have no doubt that they are as equally good/bad as anything else in their price class. All of this stuff, regardless of the "legacy brand" name stuck on the front, is made by the same couple of OEM manufacturers in China or Indonesia, out of identical chassis and components. Brad may have a (completely inadvertent) point: you might as well buy the Sherwood and save a few bucks over the slightly more expensive Yamaha or Onkyo or Pioneer, because, under the hood, it is exactly the same fucking thing anyway. That's most definitely not true. Yamaha, Onkyo/Pioneer, Denon/Marantz and Sony are all designing and building their own AVR's. I'm sure there are several other really cheap receivers that share the Sherwoods' innards, but none of the respected names. I'm not saying cheap=shitty btw. Who knows, some of the no-name stuff at places like AliExpress could be just fine.

Harman is now under Samsung, so there's a bunch of brands under one umbrella there. Denon and Marantz supposedly share some parts (I'm not sure what, but a cap is a cap, isn't it?) . I'm sure Onkyo and Pioneer will have the same stuff in them, too. My guess is that out of all of them, Onkyo is most likely to become a cheaper brand, or maybe just disappear.

They have a few Onkyo and Sony Receivers there still. Klipsch speakers (a couple bookshelf and maybe 1 or 2 floor speakers). They stock them way in the back corner of the store where no one will even see them. They don't stock CDs there now, I'm sure this stuff will be next to go. It's in vogue in SHiteville to rip on Best Buy though the years so it's so why do they care now. Best Buy is basically a smart phone store now, with laptop computers and appliances.

The SHites hated Circuit City, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and CeeDees except for STeVE's, but then screamed like stuck pigs when they started to disappear.

Yeah, the stores with Magnolia sections have a good selection of all the major brands. Prices suck though. Go there, listen to them, whatever then go buy one on sale at Fry's.

My unscientific way of judging receiver quality is checking out the weight. Yamaha's Aventage receivers weigh a ton. Pretty impressive build quality. The reviews tend to be very positive.
The brand that gets the most reflexive kneejerk audiophool recommendations is Denon, and that shit turns me off to no end. They claim that the Audyssey room correction is better than any other, but I think they're all basically the same. The MCACC Pro software on my Pioneer Elite is extremely thorough and the resulting sound is fantastic.
