Oh, come on. Yes, Hoffman is a flaming cunt. But, no, not every reissue he did sucks. Behind my original post: the list does not compel and things I already own, I already like. So when I finally look at this list, to me it’s ‘meh, what’s all the fuss?’

None. I can’t tell the difference between what all these people claim they can hear (unless something is remixed and I hear an instrument I never noticed before) because I haven’t got the ears. Fill out your profile and upgrade the gear Bucko, some of the DCC releases were very good.

honestly his work is fucking shit. Steve can't be doing anything special to the music. A lot of music is limited by the constraints of how it was originally recorded, he ain't gonna get more 'sound' or dynamics out of something that didn't have dynamics in the first place.
his mono pet sounds is a fuckin JOKE...

I haven't heard DCC version of Pet Sounds but AF sounds like shit. Lack of clarity, tons of tape damage, general "dead" sound.

In all seriousness, surely, if Steve was that good at whatever the fuck it is that does (I’m not including stealing) then he would have work coming out of his ass. Is he too old now or has he got a bad reputation in the biz?

Hoofy claims it's "too compressed", but it really isn't...he may be talking about the CeeDee he remasturbated the DCC version from??

Sorry, but it's best vintage non-audiophile vinyl version, as 1966 pressings all suck. But in digital? No way, this is re-eq compressed copy tape (Carl tweaked original mix with EQ and added more "balls"). I think the best digital version is Linnett mastered mono version in old Pet Sounds Sessions box set from 1997 (disc 4). But i haven't heard too many mono masterings. Other references i have is 2016 box set version (1972 copy tape) and Hoffman AF.

I like the Linnett mono, and heretically, the MFSL stereo.

You fuckers made me dig out my copy of Pet Sounds. It's the vilified at SHiTEville 1990 Larry Walsh/Mark Linett transfer from the mono masters. And it sounds great. Very balanced, bass, mids and treble all in harmony even at louder levels. I had downloaded Hoffman's DCC years ago just to have it and burned a copy to CD-R. Compared to the '90, Hoffman severely jacked the bass and the midrange. In fact, the mids are elevated to the point where the vocals stand out unnaturally against the instruments. EAC levels and wave forms available upon request.

I have the Linnett version on a promo disc from 1997, it has the mono and stereo on one CD, but I don't really ever listen to that one. The 70s Artisan mono from the 2-fer suits me if I ever want to shite out on Pet Sounds..but honestly, I'd rather listen to Friends, Sunflower, Wild Honey, Surf's Up, or Holland at this point...

Not to turn this thread into another SHite thread, but 1990 is drowned in NR and i heard that Landy was responsible for this and had his fucking hand in mastering choices. I just checked DCC and sure - jacked up bass and tube distortion are here. I liked how Linett trashed DCC and Hoffman personally on SmileySmile forum
