The below article at this link - reverb.com/news/what-rudy-van-gelder-did-wrong - features a quote from STeVe: Of course Devin S needs to start a thread because of the mention of STeVe and his quote. I am confused, I thought RVG was a legend in the jazz world for his recordings but not in Hoofyville? Is it professional jealousy on STeVe’s part or what? Am I missing something or misunderstanding something? Here are some highlights from the thread at: What Rudy Van Gelder Did "Wrong" [Article]

I’m glad his quote is there more for derision than anything else.

That's right. If only STEVE had recorded that music, maybe Blue Note would have been a successful company and sold some records. STEVE would have...huh? What? Really? STEVE has never recorded anything? Nothing? Oh, wow. Well, maybe if STEVE had cut the lacquers for the rekkids. I'm sure he would have...what? You're kidding! STEVE has never cut a vinyl lacquer? None? Not one? Well, jeeze louise. What is it that STEVE actually did? He what? Oh. He EQed stuff. Twiddled and twaddled EQ knobs on an equalizer. Shaved the treble, boosted the bass and mids and ran everything through layers of tubes. That's it? Hmmm. So, then what exactly makes STEVE an expert on van Gelder Blue Note recordings? What? Oh, ****. Glad we had this talk.

Steve also hates the sound of Revolver. You know, that album constantly voted greatest of all time.

Besides that garbage piece of shit “surf” song has STeVe ever been involved in anything original? Seems to me he only tries to take a layer of dirt off a painting but in most cases just causes the colors to run.

Steve is one deluded old prick. Even if Gelder was using that technique for his recording sound, why is it an issue? Those Blue Note albums are the most natural sounding 'live' recorded albums ever (no overdubs, LIVE in the studio). The kind of shit Audiophiles cum buckets over.
Steve cunting Hoffman knows jack-fuck-all anything. All he does is fiddle with the EQ and compression on a copy of the flat master. You yourself can put an MP3 into Audacity and fuck with the EQ yourself.
A lot of analog era albums are limited by how they were actually recorded, stuff like Pet Sounds in Mono will always sound a little murky due to the constant bouncing of tapes to overdub more elements, a remaster won't ever fix that. A NEW MONO mix might though, if every original pre-bounce tape exists.
No engineer can somehow make an album sound better with remastering, they will make it sound worse by fucking with the EQ levels and compression. Most of the original EQ levels were specific to make up for a lack in an element that was maybe 'pushed' down during the original production, adding a little more mid or high because the bass was maybe drowning out a snare drum.
I've not heard a single remaster by Hoffman that improves the original. He's a snake oil salesman.
REMIXING is the real deal, that is completely overhauling an album with mixed results...

RVG’s worst > STeVE’s best
Oh wait, we can’t exactly make that comparison as STeVE doesn’t actually record musicians. He just EQs recordings actual mastering engineers have made.

STeVE so desperately wants to be remembered as an RVG or a Fred Plaut. However, I don't recall either of them producing free compilation CDs stuck to magazines, nor having their minions add such accomplishments to Discogs:

I'm waiting for STeVE to tell us how crappy those Motown records were for using so much compression. If only OUR HOST could gets his FILTHY HANDS on the MASTER TAPES and work his FILTHY MAGIC on them.
So....to recap, Steve's compression = GOOD, anybody else's compression = bad?

The next time STeVE throws shade at Peter Mew, Giles Martin (or his father), or any of the gainfully-employed recording/mastering engineers who had offices in iconic places like Abbey Road Studios or the Capitol Tower, just remember that STeVE’s office was in a strip mall..!
