Dua Lipa Shows The Music Industry A Way to Make a Fortune AgainHer live-streamed concert event, called Club 2054, attracted five million views. At $10 per person that would be $50 million . To put that in context, it’s around 10-15 times what a Paul McCartney stadium show would generate. Just astonishing. it help selling music when you are young and hot. It has the most to do with it Fantastic. I'll stick with the old fashioned live shows, thanks. Well, we may not have much of a choice, at least for awhile. I see your point. But I still see life as a continuous thing. As always, there’s nothing new under the sun. How is a global livestream that’s “more like TV or a movie with special guests” really any different from Paul McCartney’s 1973 network TV special, or from Elvis’s 1968 comeback special or his 1973 global TV broadcast from Hawaii, or from the old-fashioned 70s musical variety shows we all grew up on? Same old wine in new bottles. Fitting, because let's face it, as with so many other aspects of the concert business (such as merchandising), KISS basically started all this, these huge glitzy stage productions. KISS was prescient, in the 1970s they saw (and helped create) the future that their critics slammed them for and could not grasp. As I noted above, more like the Beatles Our World live 1967 appearance, Elvis’s 1968 and 1973 TV specials (only which of which was live, admittedly) and concert movies from Pink Floyd at Pompeii to Zep’s Song Remains the Same started all this. If the band can’t come to your town in person, you can turn on the TV or go to the movie theatre, or, later, pop a VHS tape or DVD into a player, and watch the band. As others have stated, this is absolutely nothing new and what artists are already doing (living room shows, etc.) online. When I and others had a band project, we had this exact idea that Dua Lipa did, assuming we as a band ever made it that far. The project didn't pan out for various reasons, but they invented nothing here.

I’ve seen her album on a lot of best of 2020 lists. She must be doing something right.

I’ve grown to like Dua Lipa’s music quite a bit. For the past few years, whenever a song catches my attention and becomes an earworm, it’s inevitably one of hers.

Somewhat on topic, I heard a Taylor Swift song, Betty, on the radio today and I thought it was really good! I only know Shake it Off so thought she was mostly pop but I think I’ll stream the new album as it had more of an indie vibe. I’m sure the thought of streaming a Swift album would trigger many a shite.

Not that Shake it Off is a bad song at all, it’s not my thing.

Loved her Future Nostalgia album. That's got some fine tunes on it.
I do love the "she's invented nothing new" shtick here. Maybe not. But she's good, got great talent, and rather more than a bunch of wannabe wannabes on an internet forum. She went out and did it, and you can throw in Sophie Ellis Bextor's lockdown Kitchen Discos as well. These two have more gumption in them than most of the SHites put together and that's the difference.
