You only need to know their royalty rate, which was infamously low. They got a one penny royalty from EMI on each 'single' (or the equivalent two album songs), which had to be split five ways. Additionally, they only got that on 85% of sales, not 100% (due to a 15% deduction for damaged records and promos, which the record companies made the band pay for!). Crucially, any overseas (non-UK) sales only paid 50% of that total. Though their royalty rate went up to 1.25 pennies for the second year before reaching a ceiling of 1.5 pennies during the third year, it was never going to make them millionaires. This is all covered in Tune In, and Mark Lewisohn worked out that a million selling single in the UK would net each Beatles only about £750 in performance royalties. In the US it would be half that amount. This situation was renegotiated in 1967. You can enjoy the Capitol albums as much as you like for whatever reasons (and I find some merit in most of them), but the miniscule royalty rate should not be used as a justification of Capitol's practices. you have no idea about the Beatles financial situation PERIOD...you were not in their camp...so please stop.....AND thank GOD Capitol made their music exciting and kick ass of which the American audience were used to and expected....you were not there in the UNITED STATES in 1964 you had no idea what Beatlemania LOOKED LIKE or was in 1964...so STOP...they owe much to the American audience. |
