Animals is awesome [/SHite]. I was like COLA and essayceedee - I heard it years ago and was unimpressed. I revisited it when the Discovery box came out and really started to like it. I honestly play it every few months, along with Meddle and AHM. Yes I'm a fan. I saw them in 1973 on the Dark Side of the Moon tour.

I like it just as much for what it is as for what it's not. It's all metaphors and symbolism sung and shouted over some damn good music. It isn't full of war and daddy issues and namechecking every newsworthy conflict, which is what everything Roger Waters did after basically amounts to (not that he isn't effective in his own way with that stuff, but it can get tedious.)
(also, it's not boring, like the "Dave Floyd" catalog)

Two Animals tracks are revamps of songs they'd worked up and played live before even Wish You Were Here was released. They were even longer then, COLA and essay, you'd love em!
(seriously, the material is stretched * a bit thin* but it's nice and dark and I like it far better than the self pitying cod-cabaret that is The Wall. Animals always makes me remember cold cold February 1977 in NYC)

I did order just the Blu-ray for the ergonomics of the surround mix.

They should mix out the drums, as well.

If I remember correctly what I had read 15 years ago in Mojo (I'm not a big Floyd head), at this point the band was still functioning as a collective, but they were basically financially bankrupt after touring for Animals, and they needed a studio project stat, so they checked what material they had in store. Gilmour had sketches for a couple of songs. Mason had nothing, as he had never been big on writing and was already spending all his time and money working on his classic cars collection. Wright had turned into a cokehead and was creatively depleted. Waters had TWO well-advanced projects for a concept album, Bricks in the Wall, and The Pros and Cons of Hitch-Hiking. Their manager preferred The Pros and Cons, but the rest of the band opted for Bricks in the Wall. As their hope for financial salvation relied on the sole shoulders of Waters, for the first time in their existence, they gave him free reign. Gilmour and Mason were consulted when he decided to fire Wright, but it happened quickly, a few weeks into the sessions, and they were still sidelined during most of the recording process, as Waters worked mostly with Bob Ezrin. Mason was even surprised to see that his name was missing from the original credits, due apparently to a typo, but then spent a lot of time wondering if he was next.
Anyway, every time I hear someone quoting something fake deep by Waters about modern day politics, I tend to observe that if I want to be lectured on democracy, my first choice wouldn't be the guy who was the leader of Pink Floyd between 1979 and 1985.

Is that even necessary? By this point, Nick Mason had achieved the ability to make absolutely no audible difference whether he played or not. Saw him a couple of months ago and he's back to being a half-decent drummer again, after being shit in Pink Gilmour and having to let Jeff Porcaro play a not very difficult part on The Wall.

And then they were gonna do a follow up to the Wall and a sorta pseudo-soundtrack album to the movie but instead ended up doing The Final Cut, which is basically just a Roger Waters album featuring Gilmour on guitar.
(and I'd argue that it is far less engaging than all the Waters albums that were to follow.)

I'm a fan of "Animals" myself. I even like "The Wall" but think it should have been a single album. My opinion!

The keyboard noodling sounds completely superfluous and at odds with everything else that is going on. Oftentimes it sounds as if he was in a different room and unable to even hear what the rest of the band were playing. I'm surprised that Waters even tolerated it and didn't fire Rick Wright then and there instead of waiting another couple of years to do so. if they really wanted to revamp the album via remix, I think it would be vastly improved if they just mixed out the keyboards entirely. You don't like it when they play this at the roller rink?
